Unhappy Blown ECU

Anyone ever had a blown ECU, mine blew a capacitor and a whole in the board under the capacitor.

I have not found anything that could have caused it however, they are very difficult to find a replacement and difficult to repair.

Any comments?

We have heard and discussed a few capacitors leaking on the ECM board, but none blowing. These are easily fixed, if you catch it before hand. Many had the random restricted performance messages as a precursor. Did yours ever give you any trouble?

Hi,

Once or twice had restricted performamnce but nothing for long while although ocassionally the car would be jerky when it was cold and you were accelerating. Anway it gets worse I have just brought a used ECU for $2800, checked all the wiring for shorts where possible installed the new unit and now the car will not start just get an engine fault light.

Installed the old one and the car starts straight away just can not accelerate etc. and the engine fail and stabilty control message show up (obvoius because the board is damaged).

Any ideas? I am guessing the used ECU I purchased is suspect.

part number is LJA1410AH, sorry I was quoting kiwi $$ in USD that is about $1,600 not much use if the unit doesn't work, all I get with this unit is an engine fault amber message and nothing else I assume this means the unit is U/S? any ideas out there?

Old part number versus new one, does it match?

There are module rebuilders out there, you can surely have yours rebuilt for much less, unless the damage is like a huge hole in the board.

Maybe the ECU needs programmed by the dealer...not sure.

Garage thinks it might be ECU programming due to the engine imobillser system not being the same code as the replacement unit.

I've pulled my hair out dealing with ECU's (ECM's). There is a label in the trunk that shows all the control modules in the car, and after each module number is a / XXX number. These must match on the old and new ECU. Ken @ British is the expert on these.

If I am not mistaken, the dealer has to reprogram the ECU to your car when a new/used one is installed.

As mentioned earlier here the best would be to have a matching ECU, where not alone the partno is the same but also the 3 digits marked in the boot.
Maybe if the ECU partno is exactly the same, you could have the ECU programmed as a New unit. This way the WDS/IDS will collect your car specific data from other ECUs onboard and (hopefully) make your ECU working right. I have no experience with this, so can't be sure if it will work. Good luck.

Looks like we may be drilling into this, the car is at Ken Stout Motors in Auckland they think this is a programming issue and it makes sense because the car came from Singapore and they do not have the engine imobiliser system installed for that export market (way to tell is somthing on the edge of the key).

If this is the case how you get the ECU reprogrammed is another issue? what I can say is if you have a major failure of the ECU you are more or less forced to get a new one because used ones are difficlut to find.

Love for the car is still there but if the costs start exceeding the car value well???

You can only program the ECU with a WDS or IDS, and then you need to select the tab "Vehicle configuration menu" then menu option "Configuration new modules" and the the "Engine control module" (if you use the tabman, your dealer should know). What is your vin number?

It is still all a little up in the air at the moment however, Ian (great guy) at the Jag garage using the diagnostic unit has found nothing that made the ECU blow so at least we will not blow the new unit, problem is the new unit does not has the last three digit code written on it although whatever the case it is not the matching unit only via part number. I think we are going to try another used ECU first but how we get the unit programmed I am not sure.

What is a WDS or IDS?

My VIN is: SAJJGAED3AR001837

A WDS/IDS is the Jaguar diagnostic unit, Ian should know, if not you may need to go to a Jaguar dealer.

I doubt you can find an ECU who has the same last 3 digits, probably also best to try to fix your original unit.

According to my parts catalogue, your vin should have a LJA1410HB, the partno LJA1410AH you mentioned is for vin range 018108-020733. Are you sure the partnos are the same? My catalogue could be wrong, so don’t use that as a guide.

Well the car is fixed after what seems some weeks, the guys at the garage managed to get the old ECU rebuilt after we all thought it was dead and did we all learn a lot, for me do not just go and buy a used ECU even if it is the same part number with identical manufacturers numbers. Can they be easly reporgammed NO if the car it came from had somthing else installed it is not going to work properly.

Thanks to Ian at KSM Jaguar in Auckland.
