The subject above describes the problem.
I followed this post https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-button-74403/. I only pulled back enough of the fascia to expose the harness connector. When I checked the continuity on wiring, one of the wires was not continuous. I replaced all three. Put it all back together and still had the same problem. I rechecked continuity and all passed. It is an easy fix. Maybe one of the lights was out before I made the fix.
But now, I am baffled. Any ideas on what's next?

If one of the wires accidently shorted during the process it could hose up the electronics, requiring a reset. Remove the negative battery cable for 30 seconds and reconnect it and see if this solves it.
If not, check fuse #5 in the Driver's side of the dash fusebox and fuse #10 in the trunk fusebox.

Thanks for the ideas. Removed and reconnected the terminal. Checked the fuses (which were fine). The problem remains. I think the switch must be the issue. Other ideas?

Yes I would check the microswitch next, they have been known to fail. You need to remove the plastic suround across the rear lip of the trunk to get access.
I pulled off the plastic and gave it a look. The plastic is pretty straight-forward to remove. But, a couple questions came to mind.
Is it the white block on the side of the latch?
How easy is it to fish out the other end?
Thanks

The ones I have seen are in a black housing attached to the latch, but a '97 might be different. The switch has two wires and you can check continuty by unplugging the connector.
Whatever you do, do not push the red lever and lock the trunk...that literally will permanently lock it...a very strange 'feature'.
I went be back with the car until Sunday. I'll post some pictures then.
I saw the dreaded red lever. Luckily, I didn't move it. Who designs something like that?

I had the chance to dig back into my trunk tonight. It reads continuous regardless of the trunk being latched or up latched. With it unplugged the trunk lights went out and the warning cleared.
Here is a picture. It's the white piece. Anyone know where to get a replacement or fix this one?

Apologies for the angle, I'm not the best iPad photographer.

Wait, there is more. I think the problem might be in the latch itself. While the alarm is clear, the remote button and cockpit button will not open the trunk. I can hear them actuate the system, but the boot doesn't unlatch.
The key continues to work to manual open the boot.

Spray the latch and the switch with WD40 and see what takes place. Door, trunk and hood latches are often forgotten and never lubricated.
Lubricated it pretty well. No change.
Took it apart. Compared to internet pictures, it looks like I accidentally activated the red lever. I moved it back to the up position, and the buttons work.
Back to the micro switch, it appears broke. Any ideas?

The microswitch assembly was changed to black plastic, but it is the same thing, part number LNC6242AC.
So, I got the new micro switch. The removal of the old microswitch was straight-forward but the catch on it broke in the process. After seeing how small the lever on the switch was, I understand how it got its name. The lever is about a millimeter and a half wide, and about 5mm long.
The new switch is much beefier. To insert it, I depressed the switch button and swung that end in first so the top would engage. It seemed to be easier to get in with the trunk latch in the closed position. The catch for it is on the bottom and takes a firm squeeze to engage it.
It only took me about 15 minutes to complete the whole job. If I was to do it over, I would probably have marked the position of the trunk latch on the body to help ensure I put it back in the same position.
