Both Front Tyres wearing on Inner Edges only!
Fronts : 245/45 r18 (Barums Xl) understand made by Continental !
Rears : 255/45 r 18 (Barums Xl)
Have noticed over the last few months that both front tyres have been wearing just on the inner edges only ?
Front main tyre treads at 6mm with both edges hovering around 3mm !
Rear tyre tread even at 5mm !
Have had the tracking checked and adjusted about a year ago, and again recently, but not found out of alignment ! All tyres have been balanced recently too! No steering problems nor any shudder!
Anyone experienced or experiencing the same problems ?
Any ideas as to why I am encountering this uneven tread wear appreciated..
Ps..Am really happy with the tyres (Barum) they grip and hold the road well both in dry and wet conditions..Previous tyres were Continental Sports!
Thanks

I had the same problem. It turned out the toe-in was out of spec when I had the alignment done. The camber was good but the castor was also off but that won't effect tire wear. If both tires are wearing the same way its usually excessive toe.

both of my fronts had the same thing, the front left was worse by far
It had a four wheel alignment with all new tires two years ago, and another four wheel alignment a year after. And it still happened.
Now onto my second set of fronts after just 10,000 miles.
same michelin type on a Porsche Boxster for 30,000 miles and 5 years so its a Jag XK8/R thing....

I also just noticed that I have bad inner edge tyre wear, new tyres and full alignment only 4.5k miles ago. I'm really pissed of with myself that I didnt keep a better eye on them.
Anyway my front lower wishbone rear bushes showed up to be colapsing at my MOT a few weeks ago. The car is in getting painted right now but since the paint shop is next ddor to the alignment shop I will get it retested when I pick it up later this week before and then after changing the bushes.

This happens because unless you have replaced the shock bushings, and your car sits low, you can not get an alignment within specs because there isn't enough adjustment to allow it. The same thing has happened to me on three sets of tires. Now that I am having all of the undercarriage work done as a result of the object I ran over, I am going ahead and ordering the mounts so that I can try and align properly. The springs may have sagged too much over 150,000 miles for the shock mounts to make up the difference, but we'll start there.

Hi, just got a reply from another Website which may be of interest and shed some light on the situation!
"Very common , your lower ball joints need replacing. Won't be an MOT failure as they don't move much but on the road they allow the suspension to spread giving you inner tyre wear. It won't show up on alignment either. On an XK get the whole lot powerflexed
Don't take it to a main dealer who will want £300+ to replace the arms and the ball joint , you can buy just the ball joint and indi's will fit."
Will look into trying this option out rather than new tyres every 10,000 miles!
Thanks everyone.

Good information all around. It proves that we all need to pay consistent attention to how all of our tires are wearing even when we believe that our recent four-wheel alignments will protect us from abnormal wear. A simple tread-depth gauge is a must-have tool. I've had mine for 20+ years and it has helped me to discover alignment or suspension issues shortly after they began and saved me considerable money in the process....
Don't rely on just eyeballing your tires. Get a tread-depth gauge and use it at least monthly. Your eyes can get fooled. Your tread-depth gauge cannot....

ditto same thing.
My project the other weekend was to replace the Shocks and upper shock mounts, when I took the wheels off, I saw the inside edges on both sides totally bald.
an extra $600 with wheel alignment I had not banked on.
will take JON89 's advice and get a tire gauge, in case the guys at Firestone didn't do a good job.
RP2427 - the Ball joint bushing is new to me, but possible - does anyone else have any additonal info?
