It looks like I need a new right cam cover for my 4.2 non supercharger engine. The SNG Barratt catalog shows part AJ89077, but that search produces links to screws.
I’ve heard replacement cam covers are quite expensive. My question is, since Jag used the same 4.2 engine for later models like the X150, does this mean the cam covers are interchangeable?
Seems like the continued rarity of our X100’s drives up the price of parts, so anything we can swap with a later model would good, right?
I don't know which ones are interchangable but I found a brand new set on ebay - even had the unobtanium little rubber connecting piece that goes on the back and joins the two together for only $150.

I suspect you may be talking about different things. I think the OP is after the actual cam cover, whereas I think you are talking about the plastic cover that just covers the engine, but is not actually functional?

Correct. Also, any help sourcing the correct part number would be great. Attached are pics from the SNG catalog. I’m referencing part #21, right hand side, which looks to be part #AJ89077, which seems to be a $6 screw.
If you are replacing the cam cover due to cracking, you can effect a good repair with JB Weld. I've used Henkel-Hysol 9309 successfully on BMW plastic cam covers in the past that have stood up well to the test of time.
You don't need to use Henkel, that's just me being obsessive - JB Weld also works fine and has good longevity.
My VIN # XXXX 50056 is a 4.2L and has some transition items that fit 2002 4.0L and then the 4.2L. also. Discovered this with order of Throttle Body gasket. Mine required the earlier, not the latter. The transition period was a strange time. The Badge on hood (bonnet) was also 4.0Lto allow depletion of stock as was the standard practice back then.
