Can a 2001 xkr operate without a dash cluster
I own a custom bodyshop and do alot fibreglass work. I want to update my own 2001 Jaguar xkr with a computerized cluster off the obd port under the dash. Does the xkr need its original cluster to run, has anyone started their xk8 or xkr without the speedo cluster?
As far as I know, most definitely yes. The instrument cluster is connected to more than one data bus and hosts (one of) the bridges that allow data to flow between these busses.
This is documented in the electrical manual, "Network Configuration". It shows the "Major Instrument Cluster" as the bridge between CAN and SCP.

+1. The instrument cluster is the communications hub for the vehicle and is a computer itself. Of course nothing is impossible, but it would be a very difficult job to replace it with something else.

I noticed one plug connecting the instrument cluster, the black one, had 2 rows of 13 pins (30 total). The other plug, yellow, had the same, 2 rows of 13. Do you think if I removed the cluster and "bridge "the two plugs together, if the corresponding pins matched up, would it work?

Do not mess with these systems unless you know exactly what you are doing. This means understanding what each signal does, what voltages and currents are allowable, and understanding the various vehicle networks.

You're talking about major electronics and computer work costing thousands. No-one will bother.

As other stated, you will need the cluster. However, you can probably overlay it with a thin LCD panel and run what you want. The original cluster will be there just obscured by your custom panel.
Well that answers that, I guess I wont be going that route. But I have a back-up plan to remove the instrument cluster plastic bezel, between the cluster and the wood face exterior dash. Leaving the cluster attached just not seen located behind a 13" video monitor.
