Default Can anybody help me...

...find the fuel rail in this 2001 XKR? I came into possession of this car sort of by accident. It had set for about a year and will not start. I have determined it is most likely a lack of fuel, because if I shoot a little starting fluid into the air cleaner it fires right up for a moment. So I think the next step is to determine how much, if any fuel is getting to the injectors.

Can anyone out there give me a clue as to how to find the fuel rail?

Thanks

Why not start at the other end and first change the fuel filter, then verify the fuel pump functions. Those are much more common failure points.

Here is a link to the service manual download for your model year.

Put you finger and the fuel pump relay and feel for it to click on then off in 4 seconds as you have the key in the on position before start position . You should hear the pump run also with the trunk open . The pump will click a 3rd time on as the ECU sees engine rotation . Design / crash feature . You have 2 fuel pumps on the supercharged engine but # 2 does not come on until 4000 RPM

But someone mentioned # 2 will come on after a certain time after # 1 will not start it .

You may have put the engine in a bore wash / low compression condition by unburnt fuel washing off the cylinder wall of oil film or the time that it spent not running ( easy to resolve ) or old fuel .

But before pursuing that verify you have fuel pump , you have already verified you have ignition with starter fluid which can compensate for the bore wash condition . There is a shreader valve on the fuel rail on most but not all models you can bleed to see if there is fuel and I think it is on the fwd left bank .

Thank you so much for the help regarding the XKR. About 3 years ago I bought a 2002 XK8 that needed a lot of work. It was only through this forum that I was able to make it road worthy. I am not sure I am up to doing it again with the XKR, but I sure would like to hear it run before I decide what to do with it.

+1 on checking for fuel pressure. For the XKR, it should be between 3 and 5 bar with 5 bar being at WOT.

If the vehicle has not been started for some time, more than likely the fuel pump is seized.

Get yourself a fuel pressure gauge- worth every penny and it will definitively tell you the pressure status.

How's about this big guy...and I'm suprised no one mentioned this...check to see if the fuel cutoff switch is tripped...
Could be the previous owner tripped it because it was going to be stored and didn't want the fuel in the rails to go bad and simply forgot about it...just a thought.

Thank you Marvin! That is an excellent suggestion. I did not know that there was a cut-off switch. I am to the point of attempting to cut into the valence tray under the rear window to get to that darn pump. I have probed the wiring from the pump and it seems totally dead. There are two pumps in the XKR and I have a hard time believing that they are both dead.

The car will still run on one pump, so it's quite possible one of the pumps died years ago and the owner never noticed and now the second pump has followed suit.

Talking Cut-off / inertia switch location

The cut off switch is behind a panel on the opposite end of the dash from the steering wheel. You have to open the door to see the panel. Super easy access.

Well, I finally decided to cut an access hole in the package tray to get to what I thought were the fuel pump(s). I know, that makes me a bit of a "hack". Sorry. But to those tempted to do this....don't bother. What I thought was the pump assembly is actually just a part of the fuel return and venting. The pumps are fastened to the inside of the tank by at least one machine screw each. And that makes it impractical to remove from the vantage that the opening allows. Although my attempt failed it did allow me to test both pumps with my power probe. I determined that they are both bad, they seem to be stuck. So, I am going to have to remove the tank after all. I am going to try to make a "tool" I saw on YouTube to release the fuel line from the bottom of the tank. Then eventually I get to make a closeout panel to cover the hole I made. I hope this saves somebody the extra trouble of cutting a hole that really does no good.

Just a thought, but when this happened to me my Indi told me to remove the rear tank cover and pound the tank with a rubber mallet!! It worked and pump ran.........for one day. Turned out the commutator points were shot, worn out.
You can check continuity across the coil of each pump if no beep on meter coil shot.I think there's a schematic in the stickys so you can check between the hot line and the ground.
Good luck
Jeremy
