Can the Driver's side radiator fan on an XK8 be swapped in a XKR?
I ordered a replacement fan shroud from an XK8. It didn't have the modual that my XKR had, but I noticed the fan size was the same. I swapped them. The fan runs, but seems slower. I tested my cooling with the a/c on. The drive around the block went OK, but I pulled into the drive and watched as the temp slowly went up until it put on the warning light. I did have to pull a radiator hose. I recall my mechanic mentioning when he went to refill the coolant there were air pockets that had to be bled out. He of course didn't tell me where they were.
1. Does it need to have a XKR specific fan?
2. Where are the air bleeding points?
3. Should I just start over with a XKR fan?
4. Where are the best, low cost, reliable, places, to. get the parts?
I’ve encountered numerous air pockets that needed to be purged, but never had some air in the cooling system cause severe overheating.
the motor has to get really hot to turn on the high temperature warning.
i can’t answer your question about the cooling fan. But I would never mix parts with an XK8 on my 2002 XKR. If there is a different part number for the XKR I bet there’s a good reason for it. Order the correct part and hope that will correct your issue.
Overheating on these cars can happen suddenly and the aluminum construction does not fare well if the temperature is too high.

My SNG Barratt parts catalog, for XK8 XKR that shows parts for both, only showed the XK8 fan shroud. It had no notice of a different part for the supercharged XKR. Given that and the appearance generally being the same. Given the motors appear to be the same. The electrical connectors are the same and the surrounding fan shroud is the same, yes I made the guess that they were the same. I understand I do not want to run the car hot. It never is a good idea. I suppose if it were mentioned in the non transferable parts section, I would have considered that too. I only saw the difference when I had the replacement shroud and pulled the XKR shroud.
You don't seem to have any insight into the questions I asked though. Is that true? I'm looking for answers, not your admonishment. Thanks for that, but it really dosent help the situation. You are right, in hindsight i should have not mixed the parts. The trouble of having to fix it twice and the cost will do fine for my punishment.
I don't see how could consider your first post as that helpful. I'm trying to figure out what the issue is and I get the you shouldn't mix parts. I have been through Ebay and they don't list a XKR fan shroud, only XK8. I asked for other sources... nothing. I do have a 2003 4.2 L, and I see one part on Ebay that looks correct, but is listed as a XK8 part. It has the module though. I will see if it is compatible with the seller, but if they don't know, would you know? If it does the same thing, is in the same place, works from the same module why wouldn't it be the same? I do appreciate the help, thank you!
4.0 litre seems to list different part numbers for supercharged and non supercharged cars for fan assembly.
4.2 litre is same part number for both variants.
Regarding eBay purchases : I’ve been burned there and now am having eBay be my parts source of ultimate last resort. Parts that’s are routinely advertised as being NOS genuine Jaguar parts NIB, are coming to
me not boxed, showing made in China, and the worst of all, some have had counterfeit Jaguar or Mercedes (for my transmission) logos on them, like ink stamps when there should be a 3-d embossing.
these are all parts that are new. There are some trusted sellers on eBay selling good used parts; notably NomaAutoParts in Texas.
