Probably need to put the opener in the garage in 'learn' mode.

Don't feel bad. I have three of the the newest Liftmaster openers and I could not connect w/ the in-car remote system. It seems like there are different suggested protocols, but I tried each version and followed the steps to the letter... with no results.

Once you train the Homelink on the car, then you need to program the opener to the car.

Did you push the "learn button" on the opener (I use a broom handle) and then re-push the trained button in the car within 30 seconds?

Push the homelink button two more times and the door should close.

'97-98 XK8's use a "non rolling code" Homelink. These won't work with 2001 and up Rolling code Liftmaster Garage door openers.

You can purchase a newer rolling code Homelink off Ebay for less than $25 and swap it in. I put pictures in the FAQ stickies on how I replaced mine.

I had to install a Homelink Repeater to get my Garage Door Opener to work with my 03 XK8. It just plugs into electric outlet in Garage. You can get them at Amazon.

I was going to echo this repeater bridge setup. To my knowledge, there are 3 generations of Homelink devices. The earliest XK8/R support Gen 1 openers only. The later XK8/R Homelink modules added support for Gen 2 (rolling codes?). Gen 3 is not supported at all by a factory part. The way to make a Gen 3 opener work is to procure a Homelink bridge, which basically accepts Gen 2 signals from the car, and then re-issues them as Gen 3 to the opener. It is a "black box" device you put on an electrical outlet. I believe there is a process to "pair up" that black box to the opener itself, then the car has to do its own pairing with the box.

Try this...it worked for both my cars. (Recalling from memory). Clear all buttons first before starting using the instruction manual.
1. Start a programming procedure as instructed in the manual. Hold button down on both homelink and handheld transmitter until you get the fast blink error. That's the car telling you it is a rolling code opener.
2. Move quickly to the garage and press the learn button
3. Press and hold homelink in car for a couple seconds, then release. Garage light will blink if successful. Repeat if it doesn't. After two times, if it doesn't take, start over. Mine captured it on the first try.
Closer the better to the garage, also.
I think the key is getting it to fast blink error before moving forward.

I'm unable to test this again to make sure I haven't missed a step because I'm out of town, but if you have trouble, I can follow up street I return...in a month.
