Exclamation stalling out when put in gear

97 XK8 car starts fine. Shifter allows gear to be selected but then lurches hard and engine kills. Drove car to work and had no problem. Parked in parking garage on slight incline. Came out of work and had above issue. Open to suggestions not sure if I can get tow truck into garage hope I can get help to get it moving again. Thanks

don t know if it matters but 8 hrs before car drove fine. Took it to work and parked in car garage and know won’t go into gear. Not sure but car is also on slight incline in garage. It is an 97 XK8 convertible. Help me get it home thanks
This happened to me last year....

I changed 2 things:
The fuel cap and the fuel filter.

One or the other was the culprit... Price was so cheap, it was worth changing both.
never happened again.

Thats much different than stalling when you out in gear..

I'll wait for the experts to chime in, but Im gonna guess it has something to do with the throttle body sensor.

Maybe an air leak as a hose flexes.

I had a similar problem with my x type, The engine fired up and idled but there was no power when I put it in drive, it turned out that the battery was getting old and weak. A new battery solved it. Strange but true

Perhaps the lock up solenoid on the torque converter is bad, and has direct drive when put into gear. IF IT IS SAFE, start the engine and without braking, put it in gear and accelerate slightly to see if the car moves. something like starting a manual shift car in gear without the clutch being engaged.
