Default Car's died! - Resolved

Went to take the Jag out for a spin this evening after not driving ti for a week, put key in ignition, out comes the steering wheel column as expected, turn the key to light up all the system checks, so far so good, thne go to turn the key to III to start the engine and everything turns off! Not a hint of turn over from the engine - everything just swictches off. Take the key out and the steering wheel stays where it is, the windows just come down every time you open the door and don't go up again on closing, and now i find I can't open the boot to check battery etc. There isn't any code warning/error coming up.

Help...! (please)

Good day,

I would hook up cables to the ports in the engine bay to open the trunk... There, I bet you will find the battery terminals corroded and that is causing your loss of power... There was enough connection at the battery to run the accessories, but when you hit the starter, the increase in amps opened the small connection you did have causing everything to turn off...

Good luck and let us know...

Cheers!!!

There's a key hole for the boot in the badge at the right hand side at the back.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. The boot/trunk now opens for some reason and everything looks in great condition (has only done 24k). Is there anything I can do check if its the battery connections?

Take a look at the battery earth conection to the body it's a common failure point also.

All perfectly sound. Solid and clean connections everywhere. I've reset the inertia button just in case and still nothing.

Default Cars died! RESOLVED

Just had car recovery guy out and apparently the battery was the enemy here. Was only giving 9v of charge (instead of 12v). Not starting it for a week was possibly the reason. Got it started and let it run for 20mins so hopefully it will allow me to take it up the road to a local auto electrical specialist to check out the condition of the battery.

Thanks for all your advice tho.

Highly likely your battery is on the way out unless the vehicle has been left standing for the week either unlocked or with the alarm not set. This leaves several systems active and causes a high drain on the battery. Always lock and arm the alarm system if leaving the vehicle for any length of time or put it on something like a CTEK charger.

If you do need a battery and source it from anywhere other than Jaguar, make sure it has the vent adaptor fitted.

As it happens I had only locked it via the door key as the heavy rain was tripping the alarm when I set all the systems via the key fob. Would that have caused the drain some how?

I've just had it tested by a garage and it has come up as 'unserviceable'! I'm assuming putting it on a charge (or driving it lots) won't retrieve the situation and I have no choice but to buy a new battery?

Buy a new battery unless you enjoy aggravation.

Just get a new battery, yours is probably dying.

Regarding the windows, you will need to perform the window reset procedure after having a battery disconnected. This involves pressing and holding the window up buttons for 5 seconds after they have reached the top position, then pressing the "down" buttons and holding for 5 seconds after the windows reach their lower position.

Jules,

We've had that kind of rain a few times in recent weeks. Bit over sensitive these Jaguar motion sensors!

Unfortunately a battery charger doesn't have the same recuperative effects on the car as a defibrillator does on your heart in A&E. As others have recommended, it's time for a new one.
