Got to love this forum. I had a No Disk message when trying to play CD's The player was located in the trunk wheel well and I read about repairs others had made to their units. I toyed with the idea of trying to buy a used unit replacement on EBay or other source and found a few for $100 +, but decided to pull the unit and attempt a repair.
Not too difficult to remove the unit, but time consuming removing all the trunk liner panels and removing the CD unit and amp from the frame. I did notice that some oil from the Convertible top pump and reservoir had leaked a little oil onto the amp and down around the frame of the CD unit. I was concerned that this might have caused a short in the electronics. After I pulled the CD unit I was relieved that there was no sign of oil damage. I cleaned all the slides and other moving parts with alcohol and Q-Tips, then put a light coat of grease on the slides and gears. Pulled the main cover and searched for the little gear shown in the repair video and I found that it was indeed locked up as other members of the forum had discovered. Loosened a set screw and heard it click and it was fixed, moving by my finger easily. Put on a light coat of grease and checked the operation of the whole unit, by moving it up and down many times to work in the lube.
I think what happens is the lube wears off and some dust accumulates causing the deck to work hard when moving up and down to select the chosen CD's. This binds the drive gear and locks it up. I buttoned up the CD unit, reinstalled the amp, and was happy to see it work again like normal. I left the CD changer on the trunk floor, connected to its power source to run it for a few days before mounting it back in its frame. Wrapped a big towel around the sides to keep in solid in place so it won't roll around in the trunk and get damaged.
Thanks again to all the members that have completed this repair, reported on their results and put up a video of the whole process. Saved me a bundle of bucks.
Yeah.... this forum is the best tool in your arsenal
Totally agree,
I’m still “gold digging” on this forum and have lost track of the number of times I’ve been saved, or been given good ideas.
This forum is friendly, quick to respond, and an invaluable resource.... and is free!
The forum members, both past and current, all seem to have a great sense of humour and are willing to chime in on all sorts of options/possibilities.
Thanks for for letting us know about the CD repair. You’ll need to look at the hydraulic pump leak. Bet it’s the crimp at the pipe hoses in the rear of the unit. Don’t leave it too long otherwise it’ll make a real mess. Don’t ask me how I know.
I've been on several auto forums and this is by far the BEST. Not only extremely helpful, no one even complains too badly about my sometimes bad jokes?
I've been bounding around the forum for the past month since scoring a 01 CRed on ivory, tan hood convertible v.4.0. This my initial reply concerns
the CD, mine too won't eject the cassette. At this point of ownership any media issues are low priority for me. While car is near perfect to anyone who sees it
I feel the need to get deeply acquainted with its' systems and well, all the new stuff it presents. Thanks to this forum, my list is 40+ items! I put an album together fyi.
Too rainy in the northwest (PDX) to take pix, but soon enough.
This forum is great not only for help in what you're dealing with now, but what to expect down the road. Then you can take care of issues before they leave you stranded.
PDX and SEA are rainy, but when the sun does come out!!!! 10 years in SEA area.
My CD player was failing to eject, so I kept a 2" putty knife in the trunk to use to help 'persuade' the CD mag. out. Finally after about 6 months of this, it is playing/ejecting o.k.(may hang up next week??). I did spray just a touch of dry graphite into the unit in the area of the drive gear that usually causes the problem. This might not be best practice, but so far........
One note if you order more CD magazines from eBay, or others. Be sure to check that the pix of the mag show the correct unit. Some mags listed as "Ford/Lincoln/Jag are not the correct unit, and will not work. If the ad does not show correct pix, I will not bid/order.
Enjoy your 'Jag Journey'. It has just begun, long but frustrating at times, but exciting..
I had my CD player freeze up with a E01 error. The cartriage was stuck in a "open" posiiton so I pulled the unit out of the car. Took it apart and it was freed up easily just by putting a little pressue on the moving parts. Tested OK and I think my problem is lubrication and cleaning. What type of grease did you use to lubricate the slides and moving parts?
