Center Console Won't Open

Center Console Won't Open
2001 XKR -- I can't get the center console to open. The dealer said that is a common issue for older Jags. He stated that the plastic clip on the inside breaks and prevents opening. Does anyone have suggestions on how to get this open? Second issue is I'm missing the plastic trim (escutcheon) and knob on the passenger seat release lever. My trim code is SDZ (Cashmere). Any suggestions on where to find a replacement?

This has not happened to me, but I did install the clip or the release lever wrong one time and had a tough time opening. My only suggestion is to push on the lid from behind forward toward the front of the car and pull the latch and lift the lid, possibly lifting firmly. If that doesn't work, push from the front, where the cup holder is, toward the back, and lift up on the latch, and pull up. Sometimes the latch assy. can move a bit, and pushing forward or back on the lid can move it enough to release. If all else fails, if indeed the latch is broken, then I guess you could just force it with a screw driver and break the plastic latch, but I don't think you need to do that. FYI, I no longer have a latch, as it was causing my squeaking, so I removed the bottom latch assy, which is in 2 pieces. I removed the 2 screws, pulled out the top trim plastic peice, discarded the latching receiver part on the bottom, reinstalled the trim peice/screws, after covering it with self adhesive black felt. No more sqeuak.

Thanks SteveJacks and jamdmyers. I tried pushing both forwards and backwards while pulling up on the console lid. I also tried using a butter knife on the latch. I eventually got it open with brute force pulling upward near the latch. Luckily, nothing broke inside. Once opened, I removed the latch portion on the base. So although the console won't latch, I can now use the storage area and there is no cosmetic degradation.
