Default Central locking with key

Hi all,

My security module is currently away for repair so I'm temporarily locking/unlocking the doors with the key. When I unlock, I can hear the central locking go through what sounds like an unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock cycle, is this normal? (2003 XKR)

What you describe is normally a sign of a weak battery or a microswitch failing in the door latch mechanism, but given that you don't have the security and locking module installed in the car, I'm going to guess that the door lock status isn't being passed to the driver's and passenger's door modules anymore, so they think the doors are still locked after you have unlocked them, so it tries again a few times before giving up.

You could try pulling the fuse to the driver's door key barrel switches and see if that works as a temporary fix.

I fitted a new battery last week so it's not that. I'm just wondering if everything is spasming because the security module isn't there. It's still able to be locked and unlocked so it's no big deal, I was just wondering if it's a known thing. Cheers.

I think running the car without the SLM is pretty unusual - you might be the first to document what happens when you do. Does the car actually work as normal otherwise?

Everything is normal, except for the fob doesn't work (obviously), the remote boot release doesn't work (need to use the key), and the fuel filler release doesn't work (need to use the emergency release in the boot). Also when I lock the door with the key I don't get the indicator flashes as there's no alarm.

Talking of indicators, I suppose they and the fogs are the only rear lights that work, as everything else goes through the SLM.

^^ +1

I'd expect no tail, stop or number plate lamps...

The garage certainly didn't mention that, I'll check tonight.

Yep, you're right. Rear indicators and high-level brake light only. Very annoying.

And no check lights message on the dashboard as the module isn't there.

Nope, no messages or lights on the dashboard at all. If it weren't for the unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock cycle you'd never know. Apart from the rear lights, obviously.
