Default Changing Primary Chain Guides

I have a ticking noise coming from the left of the timing cover and am planning to go ahead and change the primary chain guides and tensioners. I already have done the secondaries and they are still good and the primary chain looks ilke new. My question is, do I have to lock the cams to change the primary guides and tensioner? I have the tools from doing the secondaries, but I wasn't sure what the process was to just change the primary chain guides and tensioners. This isn't covered in the JTIS as a separate procedure.

Cheers,
Hamish

The procedure is covered in my copy of the ENGINE COURSE 168.

It is EVERYWHERE on the internet.

Search for Engine Course 168.pdl

You can get the document that motorcarman refers to from member Gus' site of everything:

If you already have the locking tools, then I'd definitely use them as you have to take the cam covers off anyway, and you will need them if there isn't enough slack in the chains to finagle the guides out.

Make sure you get the correct slipper guides. There was a change to morse primary chains in 2001 from engine # 0108130000

Many people don't want to search for the correct old guides and simply invert the later style that comes with EVERY kit I have ever seen.
It's wrong but seems to somehow work?

Appreciate the tips! Haven't had a need to work on the car for a while and Engine Course 168 was new to me.

Thanks again!
Hamish
