Default CHECK ENG LIGHT

CHECK ENG LIGHT is on again in my car (2000 Xk8 39K mi), I had this checked out and was told it is a vapor leak. The gas cap was sealed with dielectric grease, this helped for a short time, but its back and will not go off. It also seems that I can actually smell gas vapors in the car. Any ideas ? is this a common problem ?

My '04 XK8 had the same problem. Fortunately it was under warranty. New gas cap was not the fix. Dealer used smoke to find leak in the Evap. system.

Its still a dream car, I still love it. Its under warrenty to 72K, but its an extended warenty, so I will have to check to make sure this is covered. I just wanted to know if I could figure out what was most likely the problem so as to find out if it is covered or not. I took it to a shop and had the diagnostic done, he mentioned the possibility of the smoke test.

the usual fault is a canister close valve.. but if your smelling it a smoke test will definitly find it fast...

i'm going to jump out there and say anything having to do with fuel vapor leaks will be covered on your extended warranty. Go smoke it and let us know that you saved your remaining brain cells.

Hey Guys - right after I posted this I hit a deer in my car, or actually it hit me, the damage was not very significant, but it took for ever for me to get it repaired to my acceptance level. In fact there are a couple of issues still being worked out, but I have the car back and I am driving it again. So now the Check Engine light is an issue for me once again. I read some posts on here regarding this problem and one said it might be a rubber hose that runs between some canisters... can someone explain to me how to find these canisters and that they look like. The local shop I was taking my car too, is no longer in business, theclosest Jag dealer is 80 miles away. So if this is an ez fix, I'd rather do it myself, that take off work to take it down there, and pay a $100 deductable. Oh, and the gas vapor smell isn't constant, it seems to happen perodically...so I can still enjoy my car without loosing too many brain cells !

The canisters areto the rear of vehicle under the subframe.
Ccv valve or likely purge valve. Probably worth a trip to your dealer for this one.
