Default Cigarette Lighter Stuck

Hi,

First post here. Tried to search for an answer to this but no avail. I've just become a proud owner of a 2003 XKR coupe. Looks and feels like a fine example. Full service history with invoices. Quite a few weaker spots already dealt with etc... There's just one little annoyance: The cigarette lighter seems to be stuck in its holder. I don't know how it should normally work but it looks like it's been pressed down and it had broken inside the holder. I tried to pull and push it as hard as I dared but it doesn't want to move except tiny little bit. It's not warming up either so I guess the fuse is gone (haven't checked yet). Any ideas how to get it out? Would use the power outlet for other things... Also is the little green ring around the lighter supposed to be lit?

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum, and XK ownership,

Never had one get stuck before, you might need to remove the whole thing, this will require the removal of the centre console, which is actually very simple.

Good luck

The heating elements are threaded, try "unscrewing" the lighter.

It is supposed to light up, my 03 had a burnt out bulb, tried to replace it from underneath the console lid (could not for the life of me figure out how to actually REMOVE it. Anyway, there is a little bulb socket that you can unmount, replace the bulb if its burnt out.

The fuse for the lighter is driver side, dash panel, IIRC, the third or fourth one up from the bottom on the left column of fuses. A 10 Amp if memory serves. Its easy to blow that fuse, dropping a coin into the socket, a spilled drink, etc.... I spliced into the wiring under the console and ran a separate accessory outlet out the back and inbetween the console and driver seat. Its outa sight and I just reach down and pull it up if I need to charge my phone. I don't use the actual lighter for anything unless an emergency, or passenger needs an outlet too. I keep a NO SMOKING plug in it...just like the rental cars have!

Thanks guys. Fuse checked -> not gone. I managed to get the lighter out by "unscrewing" it and yanking it out. It turned out to be quite badly corroded. Plugged in a phone charger but it didn't start charging so it looks like I'm going to have to open up the console to check the wiring. Any tips / photos etc on doing this would be much appreciated. Dont't want to break anything

Edit: Yes, I had the key in "on" position, while testing with the charger...

JagTheRipper, just so you know, the Jag cigarette lighter may be finicky with your charger. Mine has to be in just right to work, sometimes I have to turn it to get it to work. You might want to check that before you tear apart your console.

It's not just a Jag thing with a finicky charger. Every car I have you need to "play" with the charger to get it to work

The bottom nut on that socket loosens, and the ground tabs get rotated off from its axis.

I had my lighter rerouted to a circuit that didn't have to have the ignition on to supply charging power. My shop tied it into something else in the console, can't remember what exactly, but it works nicely.

Ok, after finding no voltage in the socket with a multimeter I decided to open up the centre console. There was voltage in the leads which go to the lighter and to light bulb so the problem is the socket itself which I dismantled as far as I could to clean it up properly. I managed to get the light bulb out too but I'm not sure what's the type of it and where to get a new one (see the attached pic). The texts on it are a bit worn off. I can read 12V and 1.2W or 2W but the rest is a mystery. On the plastic socket it says D01EC. Is this perhaps the type of the bulb? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

A-ha... I think it's this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/286-Capless-.../dp/B002BB53IU

Just need to find a store somewhere near here where I can pick one up

It is just a standard T10 capless bulb, they are used all over the place on the XK and by hundreds of different cars, you will get one easily in Halfords.

Hard to say by the actual pic but there they do a smaller type too. but again Halfords will sort it
