Default clicking in the seatbelt.

Hello All
I can hear a loud clicking in the driverside seatbeltmechanism which is mounted in the left wheel arch. It sounds like a wrong relais but it's harder than a clicking of a relays.
Is it the steelball operated by a magnet? Any suggestions?
It is only when ignition is on or while driving. It makes no difference wether seatbelt is buckelt or not.
Thanks - Daniel

I have to mention the following:

-Accelerating, braking and turning left/rigt does not stop it.
-its comming from time to time and goes off.
-When it is on it clicks as fast as a machine-gun
-When i stop the engine and turn the key to ignition-position it is gone, but as soon as the engine is running again - its clicking.

Daniel,

Please add vehicle details to your signature. The XK8 restraint system has changed over the years and MY is relevant to this question. I had to dig around to find you have a 2001.

Two possible sources of the clicking:

1. Pre-tensioner
The front seat belts have a pyrotechnic pre-tensioner which activates when a frontal impact of sufficient force occurs. When triggered, the igniter unit detonation propels a train of steel ***** through a tube onto an impeller mounted on the reel spindle. Rapid rotation of the impeller simultaneously rotates the seat belt reel, retracting any slack.

It's possible the tube of ball bearings is loose or damaged.

2. Comfort System
The comfort system utilises a mechanism in the seat belt retractor to keep the seat belt webbing force at a controlled level. Initial extraction of the seat belt is controlled by the retraction spring. Whenever the seat belt tongue is installed to the seat belt buckle with the ignition on, the comfort solenoid actuates the comfort switch causing the comfort spring to lower the force exerted on the occupant.

It could be the comfort solenoid.

Unfortunately Jaguar class the seat belt assembly as a non-serviceable item and no spares are available in the event it is (1) above.

Graham

Coincidentally, I heard a click from the shoulder area this morning, and thought I felt the seatbelt twitch, at the same time the red seatbelt light came on, then went back off a couple of minutes later.

Sorry Graham, Im new to the forum and did not find out how to put a signature.
But your informations are very profound. The only way is to replace the complete Seatbelt ?

One thing is, when I start the engine, the seatbelt-light comes on and goes off even thoug I dont buckle it. Did a pre-owner manipulate the system? (Car was bought in February/2013 in Florida)
