Default Clunking at low speed

I've got a fairly loud clunking problem in my 1998 XK8. I've had it to the mechanics and they can't find anything wrong.

The noise seems to be only related to speed changes, going over bumps doesn't trigger it. As far as I can tell, it's only caused by braking or accelerating, and it only happens at low speed.

It sounds to me like it's coming from the front somewhere, but I can't work out where.

Any ideas? It's pretty annoying.

had a similar issue on another car recently, clunking appeared only on load changes. turned out it was the toothing of the length compensation of the drive shaft.

Do you know if it's a big job to get at the drive shaft to inspect? Any idea how much it would cost to fix, if that's the problem?
