Default Coil Testing?

I was just wondering if there is any good way of testing coils without a very expensive piece of equipment ? Please don't tell me to stick my finger in it and crank it over LOL

Are you getting any codes indicating a bad coil? If so swap it with one that is OK and see what happens.

I've tried that, I switched #2 with #4 and it did follow to #4. I got a new coil and put it in #4. Drove around for about a day and it coded again back on #2. Cleared codes and ran good for another day and started coding again. Checked codes and now it's on #1 ( misfire) ( restricted Performance). I cleared it and drove to the States over 500 miles ran fine for about 225 miles no codes. then it coded for about 6 miles and cleared itself while driving. Coded again after about 415 miles and cleared again after a little bit longer than before. It just keeps doing this. I'm wondering if it's my ecu ? but why does it only code on one bank and just one coil at a time. It's frustrating. I've gone thru some of the info that Macbutt999 sent but it's so erratic I'm not sure what to look for.

It does sorta point to the ECU with the problem moving around like that. Have you tried a hard reset?

Do you mean disconnecting battery for 5 minutes and connect again?

To hard reset the ECU, remove the negative battery terminal. Then turn on the ignition. Then touch the negative battery terminal to the positive and hold it there for a few seconds. Turn off the ignition. Reconnect the negative terminal.

The SC cars used two 'ignition modules' to drive the coils on each bank. Sounds like you have one failing. You can swap them also to identify the problem.

Here is the schematic:

Not having a SC car I only found them on the schematic and they are not listed on the 'modules' page of JTIS. I do think I remember from reading posts from the past that they are mounted on the firewall and the connectors can be swapped.

An interesting side note to the ignition module discussion is that it would appear, from the JTIS schematic only, that the '99 SC model still had the AJ26 engine while the NA version had moved to the AJ27. According to the schematic pages in '98 both were AJ26, in '99 the NA was an AJ27 vs. the SC schematic having an AJ26, and in '00 both were listed as 'AJ27.

In none of the module location drawings did I find a location for the ignition modules.

Only of concern if you are swapping an engine or replacing valve cover gaskets.

Inquiring minds want to know.

The Electrical Diagrams describe the location of the Ignition Modules as:

Engine Module 1: Engine Compartment Bulkhead - Right Hand Side.

Engine Module 2: Engine Compartment Bulkhead - Left Hand Side.

The Module Location page does Not show the location.

The AJ27 Engine feeds the Coils directly from the ECM, No separate Nodules are used.

I went out yesterday and did a hard reset. I looked for the two modules for about 45 minutes and all I found was one block from each bank of coils. Block had a connection on each end from A and B bank. My car was built towards the end of 99 and uses the 2000 4 pin coils, I'm not sure if that sheds any light on the number of modules and where they are? I didn't drive it yesterday after the hard reset so I don't know if that helped. Thanks for your help and as usual you guys are awesome.

Well, I took her out today after the hard reset. I drove about 7 miles and shut her off to get somethings, came out started her up and ran fine the 7 miles back. I went out again and drove about 2 miles and she coded again. The RP flicked once but came back on. When I got home I get the code and it's P0351 the same #1 that's been coding. This is getting really frustrating. I'm going to move #1 to the other bank and see if it switches sides and follows. It hasn't coded on the B side in over 8 months since I cleaned out the plug holes and changed the plugs. Still hanging in there.
