Default Convertible Window Dance

When I open the drivers door the window goes through a little dance that is different than anything I've seen descibed in the forum. When I open the door the window drops about 3/8 inch (as it should) then it goes back up and then it goes back down about 3/4 inch. When the door is closed the window goes up the normal 3/8 inch, but now is not fully closed.

Now here is a curious bit: if I hold unto the door handle for a few seconds after opening the door the window stays in the correct 3/8 inch down position and the window closes properly when the door is closed.

When the door is opened the 'Drivers Door Open' warning and the interior lights both come on. That seems to suggest that the door open switch is working properly.

I can think of 3 possible causes: 1 -it is the switch, 2-the body control module (heaven forbid) or 3-the battery ( this is a 2003 car and I am 95% sure that it is the original battery.

Help!!!

you could try charging your battery and see if that helps. if it does the same thing when the battery is fully charged, then it's probably something else.

My car does similar on the passenger side if I gently lift the handle. I have written it off to the micro switch 'bounce'. What happens if you aggressively open door?

I keep the battery on a battery minder if I am not driving the car much. I have the same problem then and after I have driven 50 to 100 miles. So that sounds like it is not the battery?

Opening the door aggressively? Is that like when you get the 'green shower?' Or after you get smoke and flames out of the dash? If I pull on the door handle and let go right away I have the problem and if I hold the handle open for a few seconds it works properly.

The window reset does not solve the problem. I should also have noted that I still have the problem if I open the door with the engine running, in which case the battery would be showing somewhere near 14 volts.

Try a little WD40 on the door latch mechanism. I found in my process of examining a door latch device it needed a little lubrication. This is a link to my door latch evaluation Jaguar Door Latch Repair XK8

Thank you Gus. WD40 helped loosen up the latch mechanism. However it still was not going down all of the way, as the passenger door latch does.

I also noticed that the latch moved much more freely if the door handle was held in the fully open position. That explains why the window was working properly if I held unto the handle for a few seconds when opening the door.

So I took a chance and lowered the striker on the door jamb (2 T40 screws) by a little more than 1/16 inch to force the latch to open more fully. The door still shuts correctly and the window seems to be behaving.

Kudos to you!

Give I a few days and spray it again. The door latches are often forgotten and all they want and need is a little TLC. Do it again but do not overdo it.
