I've moved your post from the General Tech section to the XK8/R section where you will get a better response.

Have you tried resetting the window limit switches? Hold the switch in the down position and as the window reaches the bottom limit, hold for about 5 seconds more listening for a faint click. Then do the same in the up position - again listen for a faint click

The window motors draw a lot of current as witnessed by the 30a fuse for each of them. That much load on a weak battery will draw the voltage down below what is needed to maintain window position memory.

A quick, free charging system check at your local auto parts store will determine if you battery is getting weak or you just haven't driven the car enough.

Remember to be in the car with the door closed when you do the reset.

I had the same problem on my XK8 that I picked up yesterday. The side windows would drop down and not come back up automatically. I tried your 5 second fix and it worked like a charm. I did both sides and now they drop and come back up. Thank you very much. Now if I can get the key fob I ordered from ebay to program according to the programming procedure in another thread, I'll be a happy camper

Yes - it's often the first sign of a weak battery. The windows also need to be reset upon reconnection if the battery has been removed from the car.
