Default Deer Strike = Broken Headlamp....

2006 XK8 Victory Edition convertible / VIN A47958 / Passenger-side Xenon Headlamp Assembly....

I was out doing my weekly 25-mile spirited drive in my wife's XK8 this morning and had less than a second to react to a deer jumping out in front of me. Stood on the brakes, swerved to the left, and managed to receive just a glancing blow on the front right corner of the car instead of hitting it head-on. No body or paint damage, but the glass lens is shattered along with the high beam bulb. The other bulbs work fine. This is one of the final XK8s built (May 2005) and has the Xenon headlamps....

Lighting experts, what are your recommendations for sourcing a proper replacement lens assembly at a relatively reasonable price? Thanks for any assistance you can provide....

My 2002 uses a different headlight bulb, and I’ve changed that to a good LED, so j can’t advise you on the type of bulb.

just wanted to say, congratulations on avoiding more serious damage, and now go buy a lottery ticket you incredibly lucky so and so.

After looking at my SNG Barratt catalog from 2014, perhaps all I will need is a new lens instead of the entire assembly. Does anyone know if the lens is still sold separately?

Just now took a closer look at the damage. I will indeed need the entire assembly, not just a replacement lens. This car has the headlamp washer system (no idea if it still works), and that stalk broke off (and broke the bottom of the headlamp assembly in the process)....

ouch - glad there wasn't significant damage and hope you are able to source a replacement at minimal cost

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. Yeah, I know I was lucky but I have dodged many a stupid deer over the decades and this was the first one that managed to get me. He kept on running into the woods on the other side of the road. Probably nothing more than a flesh wound (and maybe not even that -- no blood anywhere on the car)....

Any suggestions or recommendations on sourcing a replacement headlamp assembly would be much appreciated.....

Yep, saw that one earlier this afternoon and it is on my list. Not sure if that one is the proper assembly though. From the Ebay photos, the Jaguar part number on its label is LJA4510AH. Looks like our end-of-the-series VIN requires Jaguar part number C2N2436. So I have compatibility questions to check out tomorrow (Monday)....

Update: This one is indeed incorrect. It is Halogen, not Xenon. So it appears that C2N2436 will turn out to be the correct Jaguar part number. And as expected, they are no longer available new. When they still were, they appear to have been priced at nearly $2,700 each....

Did you check SNGBarratt? Last I checked, they had them available I think for Special Order.

I did indeed check the SNG Barratt website. Their listed price is $1,972.76 and it does say "Special Order" along with "Genuine". Hard to believe they can still get them (unless they are used). I will be calling them when they open later on this morning....

I located the phone number for one of the Ebay sellers and I will also be calling them....

Update:

Jaguar part no. C2N2436 is indeed correct for my wife's 2006 XK8 Victory Edition. Found one on Ebay from a 2006 XK8 that rolled off the assembly line just 48 cars before my wife's car did in late May 2005, so the match should be right on the money. 90-day warranty with a 30-day return policy if there are any issues. Not sure if it will come with all the headlamp plastic washer stalk parts but I do not care. Hope to have it in hand by Saturday....

Never liked the idea of installing used parts, but that is the way it is with these XK8s nowadays. The Xenon HID headlamp assemblies were discontinued years ago....

I am right behind you at VIN A48222, and that is a scary story.
Scary for the deer and the price.

Good luck

Keep telling yourself how bad it could’ve been, which includes losing control of the car, going off the road, and personal injury.

in that light a headlamp for $2,000 or whatever seems like a bargain.

I hear you guys, and I know I was fortunate. I always slow down on the stretch of road where this happened, particularly during rutting season. And that is why there is only a busted headlamp assembly instead of massive damage to the front of the car or possibly a deer coming through the windshield and landing in my lap....

Headlamp assembly purchase on Ebay, sales taxes, and shipping = total cost of $1,222....

Doesn't your insurance cover that kind of damage?

With all the loonies driving around here in the Land of Fruits and Nuts, I have to carry everything on my Jag.

Yes, my comprehensive insurance would cover this if I was willing to take it to a body shop where they would run up a bill at least three times my own private cost and potentially cause several years of premium escalations. I spoke with my agent yesterday, he checked with the insurance company, and as I expected they will not reimburse me for sourcing the part and doing the headlamp assembly replacement myself....

Not worth the risk to our policy to file a claim and hand the car over to a shop. I will simply hold back a portion of some funds that I was planning to transfer from one of our checking accounts into one of our investment accounts this week to cover my cost. Works for me....

I found a Youtube video showing the removal and installation of a standard XK8 Halogen headlamp assembly (no power wash system and no auto-leveling system). My wife's 2006 XK8's Xenon HID headlamp assembly has both of those extra systems. Is anyone aware of a video showing the process for our Xenon assembly? Or even a set of instructions that cover the Xenon assembly?

Earlier today I stumbled into a thread originally posted in the XK8/XKR section by forum member Red1bw that is titled "Replacement of xenon headlight/headlamp ballast." Post no. 11 (from March 7, 2018) in that thread (by forum member frankc) contained a link that could be relevant to my upcoming Xenon headlamp assembly replacement....

Now, for some reason I cannot locate that thread after several searches. If any of you kind folks can find it, please post that thread here....
