On my 1997 XK8 (convertible,) is there any way to tell from the photo, what the age of these ignition coils might be?
I'm attempting to determine if they have ever been changed under previous ownership, and if not, I'm considering replacements. But I would rather keep these Denso's if they're not too old.
There are no running symptoms, perhaps a slight miss here or there, but nothing major. I do have an unrelated crank/no-start "engine fault" I'm chasing down, but I noticed these in the process of my work and just wondered about them.
02/97 its there on the label.....Just carry a spare coil. Its more important to check you have no oil or water in the plug wells ...remove coil ,blow out with compressed air ..if you get water/oil you know what to do.
I have a 2002 PCM with a label MB079700-etc and it's hard to believe it was kept for 5 years before the car was made by Jaguar.
I've another which is MB279700-etc so that was from 27/97?
And another from late 2005 but it's also MB079700-etc so Jaguar kept it 8 years before fitting it to a new car?
Sorry, I don't think so.
I wouldn't be too sure. I just bought a master brake cylinder for a 1981 F-350 that was put into inventory 30 years ago. You should see the box. The part was immaculate but the box definitely looked that old, along with the dust on it. Both the parts man and me were thrilled, btw.

Several yrs ago I went to buy carburetor rebuild kit for a 1940 Ford and they had a brand new carburetor, New old stock still in the box, Worked great and boy was I happy.
All the two pin denso coils seem to be labelled MB029700* and 4 pin MB099700*
It can't possibly be date related given the first cars rolled off the line in1996.

You all are reminding me of driving my 1983 Datsun Sentra a few years ago, the alt. went out on the interstate. Looked up the part with my phone, found an Advance Auto 30m away said they had it.
The clerk was laughing me out of the store when I told him what I needed, I insisted he check anyway... he came back down off the ladder like he'd seen a ghost, with a sun-faded, 30-ish year old box. So faded you could barely make out the part number ...
I wonder if the 96 cars had a slightly different coil and Denso designed one for 97 onwards hence the number. Re designed again for the 4 wire version.
Generics are available in both 2 and 4 pin, although you do get what you pay for.
Mine are 4 pin but l had around 3 coils all go in one hit so l purchased a set of 8 generics. I now run a mix of original and generics and carry a couple of originals as spares.
