Did The Dealer Put The Wrong Oil Doing An Oil Change ? Manual 5w-30 They Put 10w-40
I just left the dealership and realize the manual says 5w-30 but they put 10w-40 did they put the wrong oil ?
I would say it is unlikely to make much difference except in extremis. This means at the outer envelope of performance.
So.... Do you explore the full performance envelope of the car ? I would guess not, but I may be wrong

I've been warned to only use the recommended 5W-30 in both of my 4.2 Jag V8s because the crankcase ventilation system is kind of sensative. Don't know how true that is, but it's my $0.02 worth.
I am not sure what dealer you are speaking of but if it is a Jaguar dealership I would pose the question to them. At times age, mileage and environmental temperatures will often dictate the proper oil to use along with what the manufacture is recommending. I will also provide you with a link to do a little reading about oil http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/ I hope this helps. The wrong oil is not necessarily doom and gloom.

Perhaps neither.
I am not really familiar with the later models but manufacturers *usually* have a suggested viscosity for general use but allow that a *range* of different viscosities are acceptable.
I take out the owner's manual and see what it says. If the 5/30 recommendation is written in blood and illustrates an errant owner blindfolded in front of a firing squad, I'd go back and ask for a fresh oil change.
If the 5/30 is more of a suggestion than a commandment, well...you get the idea.

I don't know what MY you have but the manual for my 98 XK8 lists 5w-30, 10w-30, and 15w-40....it also says "To choose the correct viscosity grade, consider the temperature in which the vehicle is driven. The use of SAE 5W/30 is PERFERRED in most climate conditions, although SAE 10W/30 or 15W/40 oils are acceptable in moderate to hot climates."
Technical Service 10-100 bulletin allows the use of a range of oils from 5w/40 to 15w/50. It includes 10w/40. The oil must be synthetic though.

IMHO, yes.
Not wringing-my-hands-with-worry concerned, mind you. But I'd want the correct spec oil, personally.
It'll cost ya more, though.
