Default Do you need a VVT Tool when installing timing chains

We are installing timing chains in a 2000 XK8. The alldata CD shows a procedure to check the VVT by using a special tool (part #303-654). Is it necessary to do this procedure? Is there another procedure for installing the timing chains other than the procedure stated in alldata? If so, where can I find this information?

Thanks

I didn't use any tools other than the lock down bars to do just the secondary tensioners. The FAQ Sticky above has a complete pictorial on the work.

Test Point. Thanks for the input. I have reveiwed the FAQ sticky and have reviewed many articles and postings on installing the timing chains. However, I do not recall ever reading anything about using the VVT special tool (part # 303-654). But the alldata CD clearing shows a procedure to check the VVT using this special tool. Does anyone have any other input?

you only HAVE to have the lock down bars for the cams to hold them. You can work around everything else
