Electronics
Morning all.
I have a problem.
I switch on my ignition.....an "Er" shows on the console and there's 10 beeps.
I can START the car....but either NONE of the lights come on the dashboard....or they ALL do and STAY on. None of the guages and clocks work (fuel guage, battery guage, oil pressure guage, rev counter).....some of the centre console buttons don't work (heated seats, heating system etc).......the car will NOT....AT ALL.... go into gear......it's automatic transmission.....but the doors still lock if enough pressure applied to the gearshift lever. Windows on doors go down when doors open but don't go back up.....and just go down each time the doors open.
This happens every time I switch the ignition on and start the car.
Any advice on what's causing all this to happen??
This all started not long after I brought the car home and parked it after having it fail its MOT......MOT NOT related to this problem
TIA for all your help
Frank

Telling us what car/year you have would help, but there is a well known fault in the instrument cluster that can cause these symptoms:-

Hi dibbit. Sorry for lack of info. I have an 02 plate XK8
Hi zray. I will put it on charge and see what happens......and I'll let you know if it works
Same things happened to mine about a month ago. It was due to me attempting to update the bulbs in the cluster to LED.
When I reinstalled the cluster, the connections were not all tight. The black and yellow connectors are loaded with wires and if one pin is bent or the connector isn’t seated tight enough, the car will turn into a zombie like you’re seeing.
Mine went back to normal when I reseated the black and yellow pin connectors and made sure they were tight. Also, be sure to disconnect the battery before you start disconnecting and connecting wires back there.

Would that also explain why I can't get out of "P" when the engine is running??
I haven't attempted ANYTHING regarding the wiring for the dashboard......never been behind the dashboard

I just had the same problem with my 2000 XKR, would not move out of P. I found a 15 amp CB in the drivers side CB cluster (side of Dash) that was blown. replaced it and all is well. I believe it was in pos #18...

The window dropping issue is commonplace when the battery is low .
First, charge the battery and keep it on a battery tender. Replace battery if it’s below 12.6 v after sitting overnight (with no charger or tender connected). 12.6 v with ignition off of course.
Second, reset the window memory: that process has been covered many times on the forum, do a search for the reset procedure.
Third, is your foot on the brake before moving the shifter ? You will hear a solenoid “click” when the brake pedal is pushed down, then move the shifter.
There is a plastic plug by the shifter that can be removed to override the solenoid lock-out. Info is in the owners manual.
Hope this helps
