Default Exterior trunk lid release button inoperative?

anyone else have this problem?
interior release works, key works just not the exterior button
button is good
is there a fuse?
I read a bad wire may be the culprit?

Broken wire was the culprit on my car. Right at the spot where the wiring harness is attached to the trunk hinge. Makes sense, doesn't it, seeing as how the wire has to flex at that spot every time the trunk is opened.

Had the same thing happen on an MB 560SL some years back.

As it happens I asked my dealer service advisor about this same problem when scheduling an appointment this morning. He suggested that it might simply be that the valet button has accidently been pushed. I've not yet had a chance to check it out but hope it's that simple. If not I'll check for wire chaffing at the hinge as suggested.

I didn't find any wire chaffing and the valet button doesn't seem to be the problem. Guess it's just one more thing for the dealer to check out while it's in to fix the green shower problem next week.

This kind of wire break won't come from external chafing, which you can see. It's the repeated flexing of the wire, which can break it while things looks normal from the outside.

A continuity test will tell for sure.

Good luck.

I too am having the same problem with my exterior trunk button. Have you gotten an answer from the dealer as to what caused the problem?

What exactly is an 'exterior trunk button'? I can open mine with the fob, the button just to the left of my steering column, or the owner's key in the keyhole in the XK8 emblem on the right side aft end of the car. Am I missing something? (Like a button?)

Across the center of the trunk: JAG[button]UAR

The 2000 model did not have a exterior trunk release button. The facelifted 2002 model saw the intruduction of the chrome boot plinth incorporating the release button, along with the chrome surrrounds on the revised jewell rear lights.
A lot of owners retro fitted the chrome plinth but did not wire the release button.

Turns out my trunk release button problem was a wire bundle that also went to the tail lights which I didn't realize was out too. All fixed now.

Close. These and other updates occurred in 2001.
