Default Fan running excessively

My 2002 XKR is just running beautifully but I noticed that the fan starts and runs for about 5 seconds every two minutes when it is at idle.
Also, after shutting down and removing the key,the fan starts and runs for a few minutes.
I had the thermostat replaced and the engine is not overheating.
Wondering if this is normal or should I be thinking that the water pump is getting tired.

This is not normal...it appears your fan is keeping you from overheating at the moment. You may have a waterpump problem, or a blockage in your cooling system.

If you connect up an OBDII scanner you will likely see your temperature is reguarly exceeding 215-220F when the fan kicks in. You should be more like 195-205. Very extended periods of idle, may normally cause the temperature to rise hgher but definitely it should not be cycling at such a rapid rate.

FYI, the temperature gauge will indicate 'normal' at the center of the scale from about 185F to over 230F. See https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-gauge-62813/

+1

Excellent advice as always from Steve (WhiteXKR)

Investigate any cooling system issues on the V8 immediately. Overheating is an engine killer on this model.

My 2002 XKR did the same thing last year, the fans were just always coming on where they had never done so in the previous couple of years that I owned the car. My first inclination was to think thermostat, replaced it and have had no premature fan engagement since. It is not normal for them to come on very often, and you need to check out the cause before you get overheated. Even though you replaced the thermostat previously, I would check there first.

Default Fan Running Excessively

I agree with what has been said about the fans running excessively in an attempt to keep the engine from overheating.
If your thermostat replacement was recent and the situation with the fans has been since the install, I would start with re-inspecting the thermostat installation.
Also, since antifreeze was drained and refilled during the thermostat replacement, you may want to verify that "air bubbles" are completely out of the cooling system by removing the M12 bolt on top of the supercharger intercooler, bringing the engine to operating temperature and letting any air escape. The antifreeze filling point is lower than the highest point on the XKR engine and air sometimes becomes trapped within the engine.

Lots of good advice above. Also make sure that new thermostat was not installed upside down!

The little "Jiggle Pin" on the Thermostat must be at the Top when installed.

This allows for proper bleeding of trapped air.

Or do like Brutal. He pops the jiggle pin right out.

I had a similar problem, didn't seem to want to clear until I noticed the Intercooler pump fuse was blown. Turned out the pump had failed, once it was replaced the car ran cool. I did the thermostat first and like you that made no difference.
