Figured out front end noise - help on bolt size?
The other day I posted a question about lubeing the uper control arm components with the hopes of relieving noise. I was sure it was the bushes, after all I heard the same noise before. BTW I was planning to criticize the inexpensive Uro brand sway bar links- they just allowed too much movement.
Boy, was I wrong on both counts (so much for my diagnosis by ear prowess). One of the two bolts that holds the left sway bar bushing's bracket in place is long gone! Looks like it unscrewed itself, I'd hate to have to deal with a sheared off bolt head in that position. Access is very difficult.
The specs call for a specific flange bolt JFT10816EP for front bracket.
JFS11020F is bolt for rear bracket. I've spent a lot of time trying to decipher its size. Our sister forum has an article about the sway bar on an XK8 (if I remember correctly) looks like many of Jaguar models use this same bolt.
So far I've found it has a 10mm hex head. It's about 1 inch long. After that the trail goes dry.
Does anyone know what size bolt this is? I'd love to replace it immediately, this clunking is driving me nuts
If not can we figure it out?
There is no selection of pitch in nearby hardware stores.
Would you agree I must put a grade 8 (or 10.1 in metric) in this position? Looks like there may be a wider selection of grade 5 available.
It's a cheap part, $2.50 on line, $6.00 from Jaguar. But I'd like to try to get this done and over with.
Thanks, John

This requires an M8 1.25 16mm bolt. Job required a 24 inch extension and a dab of glue to hold bolt in while you thread it down. IMO you'd be nuts to install anything less than grade 8 bolt(I think that's 10.1 in metric) - youd rather chew razor blades than try to extract a bolt whose head sheared off in this location.
FWIW - replacement bolt uses M13 socket, the Jaguar part uses a 10mm head.
Troubleshoot- what told me this was lose or missing? 3 things.
Lots of noise, clunk feeling in steering wheel, you can move sway bar by hand at the sway bar link.
Interesting finding- the other 3 bolts were slightly lose. Small amounts but it was there. Wonder if that = play from worn bushes. That'll be future job. The bushing is only $7 per piece in autozone.

Thanks for this post, it really helped me. This bolt is giving me a different version of grief in that I could hear a suspension related rattle front left. In poking around, I found the foremost sway bar bracket bolt was loose, I went to tighten it and without much torque at all the thread stripped. In trying to identify bolt/thread size, I assumed it was M6 as it was a 10mm head, I then found that the bolt is M8-16 so was a bit confused until I saw your post. It's into a local garage in the hope it can be helicoiled in situ.
