Default Finally passed smog, now for the details

As I posted in my other thread my '01 XK8 finally reset the Catalytic Converter Monitor, I have no idea why, but I was able to get to a smog check station and it passed. I then had to take it back to the shop that was supposed to fix that issue because in all their fiddling around with the computers they did something that caused the top not to lower and the "Hood Not Latched" error code to appear on the dash. Half and hour later and the top now goes up and down.

My next quick fix issue was the glove box door. At some point in it's life the 2mm black cord that goes from the door to the piston on the back of the box broke. Of course it's only about a 12 inch piece that's needed but I had to buy 100 feet from Amazon. Anyway, a couple wire crimps, a few pieces of shrink tube and now the glove box door lowers nice and smoothly, as it should.

Next on the list is the cruise control, (I think it's one of the switches on the brake pedal that need to be replaced), the passenger seat headrest doesn't lower, (I need to do that modification to the end of the cable inside the seat) and then see why the trunk will not open with the button on the lid (I'm guessing it's a broken wire in that group in the trunk). Who knows, I may even figure out who to attach that headlight washer cover that I bought about a month after I got the car (of course now I have to find it, again).

I'm also looking at buying one of those wind deflectors to see if it helps to keep mama's hair in place. Anyone out there have one? Does it stop much of the wind from blowing back into the car?

Yes, very likely the issue. I had the same problem and gave up trying to find the break. Ran a new wire to the button switch instead.

I have one and the difference is huge. Couple that with modified quarter window controls so that you can raise them without first raising the top and you can very comfortably ride in a bubble of air that stays cool in the hot months, and warm in the cold ones.

Hi LMG,

How did you modify the quarter window control?

I followed procedures shown in this thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-37826/page11/
Pay close attention to Post #202 as it outlines the concluded best solution, which is to implement Part II of the wiring diagram in Post #107 (auto-down feature), along with adding a simple switch in the center console that taps into the wiring under the console to lift the windows on demand. Unfortunately, the instruction video by forum-legend Reverend Sam is no longer online, but I was able to figure it out just from the post texts and the wring diagram for my model year.

Thank you LMG. That's definitely going on the ToDo list.

That brake switch is a lot easier to fix if you have someone to help you. one person in the footwell finding the holes and then someone up top to get the nuts on the threads. I've heard some people really struggling with it alone but with a buddy we got it done in about 10 mins.

Hi Throwback,

From what I can see on the videos I've watched on the early year cars the switches are attached to a bracket that has 2 bolts at the top with nuts that are accessed from the engine compartment. There are 2 micro switches on the top of that bracket, one for the brake lights and one for the cruise control. Since my brake lights work I'm guessing one of them is ok, but the other is not working. I'm trying to find a source for new switches.

I'm thinking I need one that is Normally On so that when the brake is depressed it turns the Cruise Control off.

I may have not mentioned that when I press the Cruise Control switch the red light comes on and I do not get the "no cruise control" message on the dash.

I bought one of these shortly after buying my car and I think it was made by Welsh see post #13 in this thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...m_content=post
It was easy to install and worked fine but my problem is that I haven't lowered the top as much as I should due to being freaked out about the convertible hose issues. I had the leak from the latch shortly after buying the car and hoses were replaced under warranty and I also installed the pressure reducer that Gus and Walt came up with. But then later on the pump motor failed and that was replaced under warranty as well. Still these episodes have made my unreasonably skittish about opening and closing the top.

I found this page on the mouser site, https://www.mouser.com/c/i/electrome...switches/?pg=3. It has what I believe is the switch type that I need, bottom row, 4th from the left. But when you click on the image it brings up a little window takes gives you the opportunity to go to another page where there are 38 similar items; https://www.mouser.com/c/electromech..._lever_DSL.jpg. Anyone know which of these 38 is the correct one for the car?

If the brake pedal switch assembly microswitches are the same ones used in the door latch assembly, that microswitch part number is Omron D2SW-3L3MS....

Perhaps Bob (motorcarman) knows....

Just finished 2 kind of minor additions that were pleasantly simple to do, the new wind deflector and a switch for the quarter windows. Together they eliminate a lot of the top down wind issues. Well, technically those of us who are folically challenged won't notice the difference but mama is much happier with her hair not blowing all over. And you got to keep mama happy.

Progress is slowly being made. The passenger now has a headrest that goes up and down and goes down when the seat back release knob is lifted. I found several videos that showed the casing that holds the cable being cut in the middle and taped back together or using shrink tube to hold it together. I opted to remove the metal piece at the end of the casing (a little heat allowed me to pull it off the casing) then cutting the recommended 12 mm from the end and then putting the piece back on and just for added strength I used some of the shrink tube with the adhesive on the inside. I put the seat cover back in place and TA DA, one working head rest.

Now for the brake switch. I was able to find a complete switch so I'm going to take out the driver's seat to give myself some room and see if that's the problem with the cruise control. I've also located a set of steering wheel controls for the cruise control and radio. Hopefully this switch will be the solution so I don't have to pull the wheel off.

After that I'm going to re-dye the seats. I also picked up a bunch of LED lights for the dash and center console.

Joe

Well getting under the dash with the seat out was a whole lot easier than with it in place. Of course this old body is going to need some Bengay tonight. The hardest part of the job was getting the upper slot on the switch module onto the bolt post up at the top of the bracket. I couldn't get far enough under the dash to actually see it so it was a matter of feeling around and trying to find the post. Once that was on it was just a matter of putting the nut on the bottom post and tightening it down. I'll have to go for a ride later and see if the cruise control works. Well, I'll have to put the seat back in first.

Bright dash lights and refinished seats are just around the corner.

can you post a link to that Amazon cord you used ? Anything to watch out for during this repair ? It’s on my 2nd tier of things to do, right after oil and filter change, transmission fluid change, and spark plug change.
