Default Foam Insulation behind dash 2004 Convertible

Can anybody provide an explanation/remedy for the foam insulation being blown into the interior via the ventilators in the firewall/dash? (Apart from the fact that the foam has deteriorated) Can the foam be easily replaced?

The hatches on top of the central heater unit are covered with a thin layer of foam. In my case the foam fell off just by touching it.

I could not figure out the purpose of the foam, I suspected it has some minor role as sound insulator. Any replacement requires the removal of the whole dash.

I would just let the foam fly out and not worry about it.

Made the same mistake the day before yesterday. Purposely felt up under the dash for the foam damper seal; the next day a rather large chunk of foam was in the driver's vent, and a small piece in the left center vent grille. I believe this damper opens and closes to recirculate cockpit air or allow fresh air to circulate; I have only visually inspected this area with the lower knee bolster off. If I start hearing a 'whistling' noise in the cabin I will know where to look first, and I will repair it with self adhesive rubber stripping from Sprawl-Mart if it becomes an issue 'Mighty Car Mods' style. I can reach the damper plate sealing surface and 'fish' pre-cut strips through the grille, pull the paper backing off, and affix it to the outer edge of the sealing surface without having to remove anything other than the knee bolster.

While on this subject is there anyway to get into the condenser area to clean it. I also get the foam bits and am wondering if there is a pile in the condenser.

I dealt with a bit of this a couple years ago.

Read about it here

Thanks so much for the speedy and useful responses.
Looks although I shall be crawling under the dash!
