Default Front Bumper Paint Chip Repair

Ouch, I accidentally scraped my bumper when pulling in and it's got some awful paint damage and scratches. I'm thinking this would cost in the hundreds of dollars to have done at a body/paint shop. I was looking at this site: 11 oz. Aerosol Clearcoat - Express Paint

for clearcoat, base and primer I think it'd be about $50 total in aerosol form, anybody have any experience or ideas about this?

I've got a pic of the damage, no body damage thanfully.

Shortly after I bought mine, I pulled up into a spot and scraped the bottom of that front piece on a concrete bumper. (where the front of these cars ends is hard to judge when you first get one)

I had some of the white scratches like you show here. I compounded them and then waxed the area and they pretty much went away, but they are not in such a visible spot as yours are and your damage is far worse than mine, especially the spot where it looks like you may have scratched all of the paint off. Good luck with your fix. It might take a professional job to make it look right again.

ARTSTAR, It will work, but do you know much about using a big piece of cardboard to contain the color paint, then using the clear to over spray the whole area. Now take some 1500 sand paper around the edges, using soap and water after letting it dry for a couple of days. Now you can buff it out by hand using a couple of different compounds or a buffer is better.

ARTSTAR, I should have said to sand the whole area with 800 wet and dry, maybe use some 600 if you need to take it down a little quicker. You will need to degrease the whole thing to get rid of the wax or you will get fish eye, the paint won't stick. I use a damp cloth with lacquer thinner, Not real heavy or you might get a reaction.
I would take the light out, will save time in the long run and make a neater job.

+1 on Kevin D's response for the white marks.

Try some paint clay first. It may work and avoid using compound. As to the area around the light, I'd say more paint is needed. Get as much off as you can so that the repair area is limited. That way if it's not perfect, it will not show up as much.

I went with these guys Automotivetouchup.com Touch Up Paint, Aerosol Spray Paint and Touchup Paint Accessories | AutomotiveTouchup | 888-710-5192 got the 12oz MDZ, clear coat and primer. $44 total. Paint match good. Always hard to blend it in though probably better to take the front of simple job and paint the whole bumper

Default Thanks

Thanks to all the replies so far. I've got the masking material and some 600 sandpaper laying around. The paint chips are primary for me so the scratches can be dealt with later. The scratches were there before, I just hate the look of the missing paint.

Default Here it is, not gloss though help!

Hi, I bought basecoat MDZ and clear coat finish. I'm happy with the color match but it's coming out a matte finish, did I miss something? I thought the clear coat was the gloss finish? What can I do about that? I've attached pictures...

I'm still seeing scratches, why is that? Yes, clear coat should be a gloss, but I can't tell from the picture. If you put any paint or finish on too lightly it will be dry and not flow, maybe that's the problem. However, you can still sand and buff to a good finish, just takes longer.

I didn't buff the whole thing out I was only going to do where the paint was chipped off(see top pic) but I decided to just paint the scratches. Anyways I was reading at the paint sellers website that I should use rubbing compound after using 1500 sandpaper to get out the inconsistencies so I'll try that and get back. I'm also thinking I should use some filler for the scratches as well like bondo.

Just my two cents worth. If it was my Jag I would have it repaired and painted by a professional. Have you taken your car to a paint shop for an estimate? The damaged area on your Jag is in a spot that is very noticeable and in my experience "do it yourself" paint jobs usually do not look very good. Best of luck doing it yourself.

Nah, I'm out of work right now so it's not something I'm wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on. It's not hugely noticeable by people while driving and I'm not a perfectionist. When I do get work I may take it in though.

Keep messing with it, it takes practice to get a good finish. You can always sand it off if you don't like it. Use some 150 wet to remove, then go to 220 before prime, 400 before color coat.
