Don't know what car it is and it makes a difference. The R has an oil cooler that could have done it.

+1 on that.
Also is it engine oil? Power steering fluid? Transmission fluid?

My recent experience of the same turned out to be transmission fluid. Hose to the cooler just gave out. Replaced both of the hoses, took the pan off the transmission which was cleaned and a new filter installed. Wasn't aware I had a problem until I came to a stop and smoke was rolling out from under the hood. That's a situation that rarely ends well.

your Jag did you a huge favour throwing the belt. Don't drive it with out finding the source. Check the engine oil level first. It might be a hose or clamp on the cooler that gave out. It might be a mess now but you are lucky!
