Default gas cap latch problem

2000 xk8 convertible - I have developed some electrical problems (isn't that amazing)trunk release and gas cap release are not working. Does anyone know how to release the gas cap cover mechanically? The other symptom is the top does not work. The pump motor got really hot so I unplugged it.

Thanks

On my 99 XK8 there's a manual release behind the trunk liner directly behind the gas cap door. You have to pull the liner away to get access. Why would you have to pull away the liner? My guess is that the "wonderfully gifted" design engineers figured that only properly trained Jaguar (pronounced "Jag-you-are" for the less than British...) mechanics should need to know where the emergency gas door release is located...

From the USA 2000MY Driver's Handbook:

Electrical faults are unusual although not unknown on the release - it may just be sticking and the release pin needs cleaning/lubricating.

Agreed. Once you get your fuel filler door open, lube that plastic latch pin with a dab of white lithium grease and keep it lubed at all times. These plastic latch pins have been trouble on both of our Jaguars. Keeping them swathed in white lithium grease has been the solution for me. I wipe off the old grease (with its dirt and contaminants) with a paper towel and apply a fresh dab every two to three months. I believe if these pins were metal instead of plastic, this would not be an issue....
