Default Gearbox won't shift into park.

I would appreciate some advice from you kind soul's again.

I took the XKR for a drive and drink today but when I got to the garage to fill up the car would not shift in to park, this problem has not happened before.

The only thing I did different (project car) was cycle the gearbox in to 3rd and 4th gear while driving.

Any thoughts would be great?

You may need to make sure the rotary switch on the side of the tranny is not broken.

Is it the shifter lock that is preventing it from going into “P”? If that is what is taking place it might be the brake switch. Work the pedal a few times and see if goes into “P”.

Yes Gus if the shifter lock is the black plastic plate within the J Gate, I've pressed the brake a lot and driven the car while cycling through gearbox but no luck.

Default Gearbox

Hello

Yes I have experienced this problem from time to time in my 99 XKR. I found it happened after vigorous driving and I just let it sit in neutral for a while, to let the engine temperature and gearbox oil cool a little. Then I put my foot hard on the brake, revved the engine and let the revs go and it goes into park ok.

That worked for me, but you might need a gearbox oil change, I would consult a mechanic. They dont last forever whatever people say and can be a bit tempremental at high temperature.

Probably not a big issue but I would get it looked at sooner rather than later. Contrary to what they say, the early 5 speed auto boxes are very good but need looking after at high mileage.

Hope this helps mate

Smitty 😀👍

PS .... if it is an early one like mine I probably wouldnt use the J gate anymore if I were you. It is a selection which puts strain on the auto gearing cogs and the system that was really not designed for that long term. Just a thought.

The ZF trans is electric and linkage that is driven by your shifter cable and that cable may need adjustment . This is a link to a TSB on how to adjust the shifter cable.

the OP has a ‘99 XKR with the Mercedes transmission, not a ZF unit. But I don’t know if the referenced TSB applies to both transmissions ?

interesting …. Do you happen to have any documentation that could be linked to the comments ?

I would love to read up on any 722.6 transmission information. My knowledge of the Mercedes transmission is sadly lacking.

All of us with the 4.0 XKR have the Mercedes 5G-Tronic 5 speed gearbox, which was widely used across quite a few different brands and, as you say, has a very good reputation. The 4.0 XK8s use the ZF 5HP24 which had a design flaw causing premature A drum failure, hence its poor reputation from new. I think ZF updated the gearbox in 2001 and many people will have rebuilt their original gearboxes with the upgraded parts by now, but this is a problem the Mercedes gearbox never had.

Thanks for the info Gus, do you know where under the car the transmission lever (illustration 2) is?

Sorry but I have not had the opportunity to work on the Mercedes G5 Trans. I looked on the XK8 workshop manual to see if it had it listed but did not find it but I would assume it is near the XK8 procedure. I hope someone with that experience will chime in.

Incase this helps someone in the future.

To fix the problem all I had to do was change the Gear change control Solenoid situated to the NE of the Jgate.

£10 part.
