Default God Awful Noise from Underneath ... With Video

I can’t seem to figure out where this noise is coming from.
It is only at low to medium speeds less than 35-40 MPH, and it does tend to keep pace with wheel rotation until about 45-50 MPH than goes away. It comes and goes at random. Not consistent in the slightest. The front Brembo brakes have new hawk pads with good life on the rotors.

My initial thought was that it was coming from the rear. Putting the car up on stands I thought I could recreate it, though never to that extreme, figured it was the rear brakes but removed the pads & turned the wheels – no difference. Grease all the U-Joints on both sides, no difference. I hosed the rotors thinking that perhaps a rock was lodged somewhere in between. (happened on my Landcruiser) still no change.

It seems to have gotten more aggressive, but less frequent. It almost feels that it makes a final grind than goes away.

I also suspected the wheel bearings as I run H&R wheel spacers all around. 25mm in the rear & 15mm up front, though the wheels don’t seem to have excessive play, or one different than the rest.

I might take to a good indy guy that would know where to look, but thought I would post on here first.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi.

To me it sounds like a shock absorber noise.
It sounds like the noise my old truck did when driving on dirt roads.

It could also be a bad swivel (is that the rightword?) in the driveline.

But it is only my humble opinion.

May be totally irrelevant but I had what sounds like a similar issue on my 2001 XKR. Sounded like brake pads/something caught around the rims/wheel bearing etc etc at one point I even thought it might be the new metal wheel cap centres but all the usual suspect drew a blank. I finally traced it down to a loose bolt securing the CD/navigation rack in the boot!! The metal strut was rubbing and sure enough I could reproduce the noise by rocking the rack. Tightened all the bolts and sound disappeared. Bizarre but true. Probably not your problem but no harm in checking.

Thanks for the input. Still cant seem to locate.
I am checking this thread every second even at work, I am so anxious!
(spring season maybe)

Does anyone know how to edit the Thread Title? Hoping to drum up a little more action by clarifying "With Video"

Thanks Again.

First thing I'd look at would be the shock bushings.

That video w/ audio really helps, thanks for adding that. I've personally never heard that before, it is rather odd sounding. Definitely an object rubbing something else...metalish.

Have you put the car up on stands and turned the hub/rotor WITH the brakes untouched. did you lubricate your caliper pins when you did your brakes? And I assume, this audible noise started after the brakes?

Maybe that backing plate got a little bent and is touching the rotor?

Definitely check the brake work if that has been done, but it sounds like a nastier version of my car. Mine is from collapsed shock mounts and the two plates that are normally separated by rubber are rubbing together.

You can see the shock mounts from the top inside the engine bay. Do you see lots of crumbled red rubber? Are the shock strut tops not centered in the wheel arch cutout? If yes to either or both, could be your problem.

I will check the shock as soon as I get home.
The reason I don't suspect the brakes is because they were running fine for most of last season without the nose.

Come to think of it, the noise really started after it got towed. I had requested a flat bed to tow it, though it ended up being towed with a dolly like the set up shown in the pic. I knew towing it that way wasn't ideal, but I didn't have a choice.

Could this type of tow have caused damaged?

OK, may have changed my mind about your noise.

The chances of the tow driver, especially with that rig, bending or pulling something out of shape are very high. I would always recommend only using a flatbed unless you don't really care about the car.

You should still check all the suggestions above, but I would also look for anything bent or obviously out of alignment, either suspension or bodywork.

It was the wheel bearings.......
Didn't have the time to complete myself (or the tools)
Set the wallet back $2600 (Also with all new front bushings and alignment + shims) at my local indy dealer. Couldn't imagine what my dealer would have wanted.

Price you pay (in Canada / Alberta) to have an XKR............. WORTH IT!
