Default Head gasket?

XK8 2002

I had a coolant hose detach a month ago. I replaced the hose then refilled the reservoir. While I was waiting for arrival of new battery I changed oil and filter. Yesterday I installed new battery and car started but smoke emitting from engine (see video)

any feedback appreciated here. I’m a novice but would like to repair myself if possible.

It's certainly possible, your biggest obstacles will properly be having all the tools needed.
It's a pretty big job, have containers to hold all the nuts and bolts from different areas you take apart, will make assemble much faster.

Thank you. What is best way to diagnose problem without causing further damage to engine?

I agree with Motorcarman. Are you sure that you didn't simply spill a little oil when refilling as it will have ended up on the exhaust headers. Leave the car to idle for 10 minutes and see if it clears up.

Did you run the engine for any length of time after the hose let go?

You can get testing kits that will show up combustion gases in the coolant. Was there any sign of coolant in the oil you drained out? Anything untoward out of the exhaust?

It does look like something burning off the exhaust manifold.

It appears to be oil from a leaking cam cover gasket that's dripped onto the exhaust manifold.

Default Thank you

Looks like things resolved as smoke has dissipated. Thanks for everyone’s feedback. Most likely was oil spilled on exhaust manifold when my son was refilling.

Gutwein, you said in you first post that a coolant hose came off. If that was one of the large hoses connected to the water pipe below the thermostat housing be aware that it could happen again. That plastic pipe degrades over time and should be replaced if a hose comes of.

Default Hose

RJ 237, it was the hose the that exits top of engine and enters bottom of radiator. My nephew with tractor experience told me to replace hose because with engine cool the hose should be stiffer. I also changed the hose clamps. Appreciate the feedback.

That's what I suspected. That water pipe is not expensive and includes a new temp sensor. There have been a number of reports of the hose coming off again due to erosion of the water pipe flange.
