Default headrest & seat question.

new project to repair the non operative headrests on the 2003 Coupe. Rev. Sam's video explains repair procedure. The left (Driver) HR is stuck in up position. How can we index the motor to the HR in the up position? Unable to push it down. Sounds like the motor returns to down position as default. we move the motor to up position and it returns to down when we move the back forward. Can we turn the drive cable with a SLOW drill motor and retract the HR? CCW should retract it? The Right side HR is down and apparently will not present this situation. Did not locate any posts relative to this situation.

I don't believe the position of the motor matters, it just moves up or down.

I fixed both sides without any concern for the position of headrest and they both work fine through the whole range of motion.

Thanks, I was concerned if the motor was in DOWN position and the Headrest was up, the motor would stall due to unable to position the HR correctly. Sounds like it reverses after it cycles up. Perhaps I over think projects?

Gosh, we have never done that. LOL
The worse part about trying to figure machines is when you start applying it to your golf swing, don't do that.

Just do the headrest fix as prescribed and you'll be fine. When we purchased my wife's XK8 in early February 2012, the passenger headrest was stuck all the way up and looked like a giraffe. I read about the headrest fix using heat-shrink tubing after removing 12mm of cable sheath but had my doubts that it would resolve the problem. I did the procedure anyway. Lo and behold, the headrest began working properly. So I lowered it all the way down and there it has remained ever since....

You might check this thread if you haven't seen it already:

Some people have had trouble with the shrink tube fix coming apart, but the plumbing fitting should have no such problem.

I'm half way though this job at the moment - passenger side done , now on to the driver's side.
Used shrink tubing as per TSB but then reinforced the join with a 16mm pipe clamp.

I just did the fix on my 2004 XK8 3 days ago, used a 2 inch piece of a metal from a dollar store throw away paint brush for reinforcement covered with 2 pieces of adhesive shrink wrap. I took out 14mm. because somebody on the forum said 12 was a little short. The first time I cycled the motor it went in one inch steps and stopped. After cycling top to bottom it works great. I don't know how much damage I would have done withought the great help of the folks on this forum.

Thanks to all who contributed info and encouragement on the head rest projects. Spent close to 1 1/2 hrs. this pm and did both. the drivers side material came loose easily, but the passengers took 20 minutes of "Talking To". Both side now work and we are back to completing the shocks replacements now.
