Hi All

Brought my XK8 out of hibernation yesterday and it wouldn't start. Cranked ok but would not fire up. Possible flooded engine as came out of garage and switched off while closing doors (mistake i think !). Anyway went through process for flooded engine, fuse number 7 out, checked fuse pump relays all ok, tried flooring accelerator all to no availe . Next step called out AA home start who did similar checks but found that there was no fuel in the fuel rails . Possible diagnosing faulty fuel pump ? So in current situation they couldn't tow it to local garage round here as all shut due to coronavirus .
Have got a replacement fuel pump now, but now need mobile tech to fit in situ. I gather its a tank out job, bit beyond me so was wondering if anyone knew or could recommend a mobile engineer in shropshire area who could help Many Thanks

Golfball, this is not necessarily a tank out job if you have a coupe. On my car, a 2004 coupe, I replaced the fuel pump via the rear subwoofer. If yours is a convertible, then yes, the tank will have to be removed. Is it possible for you to DIY?

Thanks for being a good sport....Just pulling your leg a little......I do have an Engineer that used to be with Aston-Martin that you might get to fix it but with the travel restrictions today I don't think he could make it....I will say, if I could,,? The last time my Fuel Pump went out (I thought)…..One of our Friends here on the Forum told me a story about our Fuel Pumps....We listened to him and found it was not the Fuel Pump at all....It was the wiring and connections around the Ring on the Top of the Tank...We cleaned those real well and tightened them good and that solved the Problem...I don't have any idea what year your Car is so that's about as far as I can go with it.....Seeing as how a Fuel Pump cost about $800.00, It would be worth the try...…

This only applies to the 4.2L cars. Those that have the 4.0 get one $60 pump if an XK8, and 2 of them if an XKR.

Still would help to know if its a coupe or convertible....4.0 or 4.2.
Lots of help here by members that have done this job at home themselves.

 

2001 XK8 Convertible, so you won't get rinsed on the pump cost, but no easy access, unfortunately.

 

Golfball, had your problem back in January on a winter slumber, but needed inspection.
Jon89 and I did the job on the garage flood on jack stands. One of the biggest problems was the room for working under the car and draining the tank. Not impossible, just having the right tools will make it easier than the big struggle we had for a hour or so just to get the tubes off the tank.
Read our thread and save a bunch of time, all the upper part in the boot is well documented, so our added bit of information will smooth the operation out for you. If you are not a bit flexible don't even think about it, as your arm needs to go between the frame and suspension holes to pull and push on the pipes.

I have read that some members who own the convertibles cut an access on the rear parcel shelf to be about to access the pump from above.

 

+1 with Glandaniel, in fact I think another gentleman recently posted specific notes for filling the hole. I'm sure I'll be using it someday with mine.

As I recall, you'll need to use an offset drill given the space.

Yes managed to get replacement pump cheaply enough, but access looks like tank out, when i can get someone out here, but looking difficult around hear due to coronavirus !

Good news, your pump is not as expensive. Now you are faced with a choice. Cut an access hole to make the job easier or drop the tank.

Where I live we have the strictest quarantine of the nation:

• Curfew is at 7:00 pm. If you are caught on the road after 7:00 pm you get thrown in jail and fined $5,000.
• Only essential businesses are operating.
• Civilians are only allowed to go to, pharmacies, supermarkets, and drive-throughs for fast food.
• If your license plate ends in 0,2,4,6 or 8 you can only drive on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
• If your license plate ends in 1,3,5,7, or 9, you can only drive on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
• No civilians are allowed on the road on Sunday. Only hospitals and pharmacies are open.

If where you live has implemented anything like that, I would certainly look into changing the pump myself, or learning how to do it. With an access hole, it is a fairly straight forward project. If you have to remove the tank it will be a PITA.

When I did it, even though I used the access through the subwoofer that the coupe has, I still emptied the tank from the trunk using an aquarium water hand pump to suck the fuel out of the tank.

Changed my pumps through the subwoofer hole. (coupe)
If i didnt have the coupe id be cutting the hole..(my personal preference)
Its not that difficult to change the pump, and some different ways to do it..
Just pick the way you feel more confident with and give it a go..

Thanks for the update, Yes we have restrictions around here now. No garages open locally only for fuel. Will be looking at cutting that hole instead of tank out job i think
