Well, this isn’t good. I tried to add keys using ThinkDiag and now the car won’t start. 1998 XK8. I had one good key and two that would turn on the car but not start it. I went to Special Functions - Alarms/Security - Security Immobilization Set Up, and now the one good key won’t start the car either, it will crank but not fire. Obviously this was the wrong function in the ThinkDiag. Suggestions?

 

P1260 logged in the ECM is the only code.

 

If anyone could please tell me how to program keys with ThinkDiag that would be greatly appreciated, I purchased this thing after researching on the forums and so many people posting about them being great for the XK including to program keys.

The immobilizer app doesn’t go below a 2006 for an XK, and selecting either type 1 or type 2 doesn’t communicate with the car. Still the only fault code is P1260, and I cannot communicate with the KTM, which I’m not sure is normal. I’m positive this is from me running the immobilizer set up because the car was running fine yesterday and this morning.

 

I don't know anything about devices except WDS or IDS.

Ok thanks. Honestly it’s looking like ThinkDiag doesn’t fully support the X100 with all of their features, contrary to what some others have posted. If I can’t figure out the trick with this system I’ll seek out a WDS or IDS.

 

ThinkDiag is not a Jaguar backed technical diagnosis software for working on these cars. The likelihood that you could end up with a very large and expensive paperweight is high if you use it.

Use Jaguar IDS or WDS.

 

The fact that the engine rolls over shows hope. Interesting the other keys passed the immobilzer check and cranked but not start it.

It's a real longshot, but try a hard reset with the battery cables. Hopefully the system will reboot back to original programming.

Instead of trying to store new keys to the ECM, I believe it would be easier to clone blanks off the original key as the '98s use the simple Megamos 13 RFID chip. I've got a cheap Zed Bull that read our '99's keys and likely could have made clones. It won't reproduce the later keys with the Megamos 48 chip.

 

Actually only the original good key cranks the engine. The other two still power up the car but won’t crank. I think the issue is the immobilizer, not the keys. I have an SDD coming, in the meantime I’m taking advantage of the downtime and replacing all of the suspension.

 

For anyone who reads this in the future, I went with a VM based version of IDS/SDD from British Diagnostics. I had to play a little bit with the VM settings and things didn’t go exactly according to the instructions, but I got it up and running and managed to fix both my immobilizer and program my keys. Considering the low price I would strongly suggest that anyone with moderate computer skills to go this route, don’t waste your time with generic readers.

 

what kind of computer did you use because it seems to be picky when it comes down to the older stuff im in the market as well

I believe the computer is running Windows 10, it’s a few year old laptop. Took a little fiddling to get it running, but now I’m happy.
