Cool How to make the English Fog light a Brake Light

Hey Guys! I've seen it here but when I want it I can't find it! How do I make the English Fog light into an additional Brake light? Where or How?
Thanks!

Here ya go Buddy, this is the wiring for my 03. See attached wiring diagram, you can wire as both brake lights and switchable fog lights or just brake lights. I like having the fog light function still operable as if I get a tailgater I switch on the fog lights and they back off instantly while I just keep on driving, no need to brake check them.

This drastically increases the brake light visibility.

Cool Thanks very much!

Jandreu, Thank you so much! I just bought a set of Victory-Edition Tail Lights and will install them tomorrow and I thought what will I do next week-end? Now you know what I will be up to! I haven't looked over your directions yet but hopefully, if I have a problem, you will back me up....
During the winter, I enjoy reaching over an hitting the English Fog light the same as you, so I'm glad I can wire it that way....We have a bunch of those bumper riding suckers here in Houston! Thanks again!

Anytime, very simple to do, two wire taps and a diode is all you need.

Jandreu, Have you seen or do you know if there is a You Tube of this? After looking over your very professional Electrical diagrams, I realize that I'm not a very professional Electrician! When they called out "Electrician Class", I thought they said, Well, something else, and I went Home early......I'm at sort of a loss!

No utube that I know of. Came up with this one all on my own. Give me a day or two and I'll open my rear fuse box and take some photo's. All you are doing is jumping the brake light circuit into the fog light circuit. By using a diode which only allows current to flow in one direction you are able to use just the fog lights without the brake lights coming on. Note on the diagram the diode has a line on one end, this shows which way the circuit works. It needs to be installed in the direction shown.

Jandreu......I would appreciate anything you might do! This last message started my wheels turning....but now that Radio Shack has moved on?? where would I get a diode?
Thanks for putting up with me!

Took a minute to take some photo's and put this together for you. See attached pdf document. Not sure where in your area to get a diode, any electronics shop, they are common and very cheap.

Note this is for my 03, I don't know what year your car is, would be helpful to include that info in your signature line. Check your wiring diagram for your year model.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Smile A Happy Guy!

Jandreu, What more could a Man want? Thank you so very much!
My 3rd XK was a Black 2003 XKR Coupe and I haven't found anything different mechanically between it and my current 2005 Coupe, so this information should be just a duplicate......I'll send you some Photos of the Lights working as soon as I get it put together.....I just replaced my Tail Lights with a set of Victory-Edition Tail Lights and I'm replacing all the Bulbs with the new CAN Bus LED Bulbs. So far I have received the Back-up and the English Fog Light Bulbs...the others are on "Back-order". I haven't had a problem with these new Bulbs turning on the "Check Tail Lights" gizmo on the Dash and that's a good thing....The LED's are about 75% Brighter than the Halogen Bulbs...
During the winter months, here in Houston, on the way Home at night all these new Cars have LED Tail Lights and all the Pick-up drivers all seem to drive with their LED Headlights on "BRIGHT" and stay right behind you.....Now I will be able to make them back off a little! Billy Clyde

Billy,

The phrase English Fog light fascinated me.

I Googled [Houston + fog] and found plenty of photos. As far as I can tell, Houston definitely gets fog and American fog looks no different to English fog.

Rear fog lights have been a legal requirment in the UK and Europe for many years. Do US vehicles not have them fitted as standard?

Graham,

Rear fog lights here in the U.S. are very rare. In the 47 years that I have been driving, our two Jaguars are the only vehicles I have owned that came equipped with rear fog lights....

Thank Jon.

Given that so many other features on a UK vehicle must comply with US regulations to allow import, I'm surprised the rear fog lights aren't either disabled or deleted. Many US drivers not familiar with the marque must think Jaguar owners drive around with their brakes on.

I for one am glad to have the rear fog lights. After all, when driving in fog they do provide an extra measure of protection from tailgaters (assuming the tailgaters are indeed paying attention to the road ahead of them and not their damn cell phones)....

Smile English Fog Lights

Hi Graham,
Jaguar is the only auto brand that I have noticed having the "English Fog Light" and they have had them for sometime....I guessed that they were required in England, therefore they just leave them on when they export them......Some Jag Owners don't know what they are for, (It's about 50/50) and they drive around with them on and then others understand.
I like them when someone is Tailgating me...(reach over and hit the button and watch their nose go down!) After installing the Victory-Edition Tail-Lights, I thought it would be nice to hook them up as real Brake Lights and James was nice enough to send me all kinds of diagrams and photos, to show me how to do the job! What a nice Man! This way, he tells me, you can either turn the EFL on as a Brake Light or use it as a Fog Light! I'm headed to the Radio Shack right now to buy a "Diode" (whatever that is!)

Graham, We call some other Jaguar parts differently than our Jag Brothers in England, such as the Front Bumper, as you call it, is the Nose piece! Remember?

And of course there's the trunk vs boot name difference. On mine, it says "BOOT OPENED" or unlocked...

Trunks belong on elephants. I only use 'luggage compartment' in posts on the forum.
