Default How to recover back of floor mats

I pulled some orig xk8 floor mats that will work great in mine. Problem is that they sat in water in the car for some time through the years it appears and the backs of them are in various states of falling off. They never were rubber coated like most are in cars. It is/was some type of black material covering.
Anyone have any idea what I can use on the back of them to seal them back up. Any kind of spray that when dry would seal them but not just fray back off onto the carpets after a few drives in the car? Maybe put new cloth on them and glue that to the back?

Maybe have some cloth sewn on the back. Matts in my xkr are deteriorating in much the same way

Go to your local fabric store and ask to see their selection of waterproofed fabric. Pick a heavy-duty weave that has been infused with a rubberized coating. Get a small can of brush-on contact cement. Once your old mats are thoroughly dry, use them as your template to cut the backing fabric into the proper shape. Then use generous amounts of contact cement to attach the backing fabric to the underside of your mats. Once the two pieces are lined up and pressed together, lay them on a flat surface, cover them with a sufficiently-sized piece of plywood, and set heavy objects all across the plywood to ensure a consistent bond. I would allow them to cure that way for at least three or four days before placing them in the car just to cut down on the glue fumes you'll have to put up with for awhile....

I wonder of you could use a can of Flex-Seal. It comes in black or white. t is a spray on plastic. The add shows them coating a screen door and then floating on it. I have used it to line garbage cans and to seal pinhole leaks in vacuums. I think it would bond well and seal the back. Just a thought.

I suppose that would at the very least encapsulate all that fuzzy mess from getting everywhere

I used the flex seal but the stuff STINKS. ha ha ha. Smells (strong) like tar almost a week since last coating. No way in hell I want that in the car. What to do?

You can try dusting it with Talc, or cornstarch. Now that it has set you could try washing it with soap and water.

FlexSeal is probably nothing more than cheap undercoating at twice the price of what you can buy in any auto parts store.
