Default How to turn the engine over without starting it.

Just changed the cams on my XK8 and want to turn the engine over a few times to get the oil lubrication working before starting up properly. Any advice how to do this simply and effectively?
Thanks

Press the accelerator all the to the floor and hold it there. That shuts off the injectors. You can then rotate the engine with the starter. Hit it for about ten seconds stop and wait then again. This will keep the starter from overheating. Don't release the accelerator until you are ready to start.

Vern's right of course. Another idea : dont forget you can pull the fuel pump fuse while idling. Once she stalls, you're good to go using the starter motor to turn her over. As Vern mentioned: Just dont overdo it - starter circuit eats ALOT of current = things heat up, Fast!

Disconnect electrical supply to injectors and the spark plugs .

Not that difficult and possibly a bit safer than the above if you do not get it quite right.

Most of these things will set a DTC in the ECM. (removing relays and fuses)

Jumping the starter relay with the KEY OFF will not induce fault codes.

Did you use CAM installation lube on the cams?

Personally, I would not want to turn it over, that would turn the cams as well and do it with no oil. I think you are better off just starting the car and getting the pressure and volume up to the top end quickly than turning it over with no oil pressure pressure.

If you really want to prime the engine, you can try to remove the oil pressure switch and use a hand pump or centrifugul pump to prime the engine through the pressure sensor tap without turning the engine over. That should push oil up to the cams.

will second that regarding using the cam lube. If so, immediately starting is much better. These engines prime very quickly with 0W and 5W oils.
also note that when holding the accelerator to the floor, make sure that the kick-down switch is depressed. On some cars, this is what turns off the fuel delivery.
