I havent really heard of too many people doing an aftermarket unit for our cars with the not so premium Alpine systems. I did a single din dvd cd navagation unit in my old 97 xk8 but everything about this alpine is pointing to a complete re wiring to go aftermarket anyone change there headunit with alpine?

I like Alpine equipment, had the flip-out DVD and a 4-ch amp in the old jeep, loved it. Their model lineup is really thinned down in the last 5 years, and many tailored to MP3/Ipod use, only one flip-out unit now, a couple double din screen versions, but then they took their advanced audio features out of the unit, and make you buy an add-on module to get the 7+ EQ and speaker delays, amongst others. I use the JVC ADV-49 (single din) because of the full-gambit of features DVD, MP3/WMA, Ipod, Aux video in/out, direct power and use of portable hard drives, plus it's blackout-feature is nice. The bluetooth via phone lets me down as the mic is built-in, but the new AVX-77 (same in almost all manners, except some cool bonuses like custom wallpapers and button placement) has a wired mic that should help out a ton...just saving up now to do the swap.

Got a wiring schematics...but I'm having a little trouble deciphering the wiring codes. I'm pretty sure W=white, B=Black..or blue, O-orange,G=green or gray.Y=yellow..etc. But what is NG...and U..and YU, etc. (Mostly having trouble indentifying the wires coming going into and out of the power amplifier in the trunk, as I plan to replace the factory amp with an aftermarket amp..along with a new Alpine head unit, and then have an audio shop in Fort Worth fabricate a faceplate/fascia. Any help is appreciated...Thanks.

This was my major drawback in buying a Jag...the old-school tape deck radio/CD combo. Having just installed a beauty of a XM/HD Radio/BT head in my MINI before I sold it, I was dreading not having everything that I had in my last car. Luckily, I've made some good CDs for the time being, but...

I'm really enthusiastic about installing at least a new head unit in my Jag now...and maybe an aftermarket amp!

My question about the aftermarket head unit though is this...when I bought the one for my MINI, I bought it from Crutchfield and they included a matching MINI-specific head-to-car wiring harness. Is this universal, or is there a specific head-to-car harness for a Jaguar? Since most places don't support installations in Jags (from my experience) these sort of things probably aren't easily obtainable...or at least I'd assume.

What have you all who have installed new head units found?

Thanks!

Dave

My shop hardwired it all to the existing wiring. My old head unit is not going back in.

However, brobin above found a UK supplier (figures!) that makes a harness adapter that will work on our XKs. May take a little while to arrive.
