Default Intermittent brake lights.

Hi all,
I am looking for some advice about my Jags brake lights. While driving at night a few days ago I noticed that sometimes the brake lights do not come on when the brake pedal is pressed. I could come to a complete stop without the lights coming on at all.
Other times they work perfect. It seems to be completely random as to if they work or not.
I also noticed that when stopped and in park, the same seems to happen. I apply the brake and cannot select drive. I have to press the pedal a couple of times to illuminate the lights in order to get the car into gear.

I am in the process of importing the car into Finland at the moment and it went for a major inspection yesterday. I was sure it would fail on the lights, but, low and behold they worked fine during the test!

I did have a similar problem on a previous car (Peugeot 106 GTi) and lubricated the switch located behind the pedal which cured the problem. I am not sure if that is the problem so I didnt try that with the Jag. I thought I would ask you guys first to see if you could point me in the right direction!

Thanks for reading,
John.

Brake light switch faults are COMMON on the X100 and X308.
They use the same basic switch except for the bracket and length of connector.
Replace the switch assy.

When this happened to me, it turned out to be a dry soldered joint connecting one of the two microswitches to the double sided circuit board - easily accessible and repairable once the switch assembly was removed.

When re assembling, ensure the white plastic lever arrangement is pushed out to the position shown in the first photo. It is then pushed into the correct position by the brake pedal.

Good luck replacing the whole assembly in the car! It's so easy to get out and a right **** to get back!
