Hello guys, Im Sam from Montreal, canada.
I currently drive an Audi A4 convertible
Always been a XK8/R fan since i first laid my eyes on one, friends dad had 2, i think now is the time to get one, hence one of the reasons i signed up.
I hope i will learn more from you guys and this forum.
I will be looking at 97-2005 model XK8 or XKR, I heard these cars are problematic and are expensive to maintain, but i believe people who had bad experience with any product are usually the most vocal about it, but so far, based on what im reading, i feel like backing out already lol.
Thanks.

We consider the first 6 years of XK8 production Jaguar's field trial period. By the '03 model year they had just about resolved all the problems brought to their attention by owners. Not that the early cars are not a pleasure to own and drive, but if you can start in the '03 - '06 MY's you will have a very dependable car.
. . . and welcome to the forum.

I will say I have a 2000 XK8 and I've had no issues. I've just had routine maintenance. The most expensive thing was the rear pinion seal that was leaking. Other than that it's been fluids and filters. Good luck on your search. Make sure you don't settle on a car, do all of your homework on it and you will be rewarded. There are few cars its age or its price range that are as rewarding or as head turning. That said, parts do tend to cost more, and if you don't like to do at least some of the work yourself it can be a bit expensive. I will say to look for a nice independent shop to do any work you don't want to tackle on your own/ Check out the FAQ for lots of good info.

Paperstacks, firstly welcome to the site and in particular one of the best sections on this forum.
If you ask direct questions, expect honest and direct answers!!
Btw - Also owning an Audi A6 (I see you're an Audi owner ) I wouldn't be throwing too many bricks. My 07 plate A6 ( Well into the production run has had more than its fair share of problems )
slating a valued member such as test point isn't acceptable and won't be tolerated here!

I took that as a humorous response to one of my often miss understood attempts at humor.
. . . and . . . I only have the steering wheel reach cable, and the passenger seat control module failure unresolved at this time (both the driver and passenger seat control modules have already been replaced under warranty).
I have had 2 XK8's, both with complete warranty and repair records. Posting all the repairs done to those two cars would completely shut down the market for used XK's. Jaguar fixed most all under various warranties but they display almost all the weaknesses in the original design.
Oh, by the way, on the Gold Wing I have had to replace a $12 micro switch after 9 years.

Paperstacks, pay no attention to test point. He's kinda jaded. I have an '03 XK8 with 88,000 miles on it, and it has been great mechanically. I've had a few minor problems, but nothing that stopped the car dead in its tracks or required towing. Things like the electric headrests and hydraulic hose failures are really minor. Sure, a hydraulic hose failure might cost you $2000, but it's avoidable, and you can still drive the car even with a broken convertible top. If you're a little bit handy and don't mind getting your hands dirty, most problems that might come up can be fixed with a few hours of time and some parts from a junkyard.

P-Stacks...
Buy a coupe and avoid the green shower entirely! My 02 has 143,000 + miles and the only time it had to be towed was due to a fuel pump failure. Bearings, thermostat and a few other minor things had to be addressed over the 3 1/2 years I have owned her.
Well worth it.
I think my car has great karma as I too, like the Rev, have had great luck. IMHO its all about the previous owner. Did they trash it or take care of it.
And most importantly...welcome to the most helpful and friendly luxury car forum on the planet.

i have a 98 xk8 coupe and my dad bought it crashed a few years ago (rear end damage). when he owned it he had only one problem which is that damn restricted performance message and stopped driving it. after i sold my lex i bought the xk8 from him and cleaned the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body and my restricted performance message was taken care of. i drive it almost on a daily basis and so did my dad and we love the car and other then the restricted performance message, which was easily taken care of, its been nothing but reliable.
