Not all of us have experience "hash marks" running from our shoulders to our sleeves.... Therefore some questions/topics keep popping up. Have some patience, we're stumbeling over ground that senior members have covered long ago. It's still all new for us...

Chrysler and Jag call it a W5A-580, Mercedes calls it a 722.6
Chrysler used it in LOT's of cars.. and Mercedes has been using it in one form or another for almost 30 years.. early versions were none computer controlled ext ext...

CORRECTED... as most of the XJS boxes in the 70s and 80s were GM Turbo 400s (a fine transmission) but the question was specifically regarding XK8/Rs...As pointed out in Jaxkr's post below the XKEs had the Borg Warners, thanks for the correction! (Maybe I forgot about that because the automatic in our 67 XKE 2+2 was crap)
Regardless, and back to the original point, there were no GM transmissions used in Ford developed XK8/Rs

Dear Fred
Thank you for submitting your request with Autohaus Arizona. We do stock
the ESSO LT 71 141 fluid from Pentosin as part number G052162A2 for
$15.92 per liter. Ten of them would run you $159.20.

here we go again....
Many fluids meet that same spec, including the Mobil 1 transmission fluid. Interestingly enough, while some people (including Jaguar, of course) swear up and down that only the Esso product is appropriate, guess who that company is? Yep, Exxon. And who is also the same company? Mobil.
It's hard to imagine the same oil company would make two transmission fluids which both meet the same LT71141 specification yet for some reason only the more expensive dealer-branded version (at eighty bucks a quart for the synthetic, fifty for regular) is correct for the Jaguars. I took my (non-existent) chances with the Mobil 1 synthetic at eight bucks a quart and never looked back.

The only difference I am aware of is the color. Jag fluid is clear, while the Mobil 1 is red. Probably because everybody expects transmission fluid to be red, but I really don't know. There could be other differences, but in the meantime I think it is odd to have two fluids from the same company which meet the exact same specs, yet curiously enough only the more expensive of the two is proper and nobody can really tell us why.
