Default Jag/Merc transmissions

Want to settle a bet with a friend. Which of the XK8/R's have Mercedes transmissions? And what model Mercedes do they share them with? Thanks for your help.

XKRs through 2002 (4.0 Litre) use the Mercedes W5A-580 Transmission. Don't know exactly which Mercedes use it but I understand that 12 Cyl Mercs use it.

the 5-speeds are the Mercs, the 6speeds are GM sourced.

Default not quite....

AFAIK, none of the XK8s had merc transmissions.

The 5 speeds in the early cars were the ZF 5HP24 transmission. Lots of discussion about this subject in this forum, ad nauseum.

Hahahaaa!!... How Rude!!... But inquiring minds want to know...
Not all of us have experience "hash marks" running from our shoulders to our sleeves.... Therefore some questions/topics keep popping up. Have some patience, we're stumbeling over ground that senior members have covered long ago. It's still all new for us...

Actually, that ZF 5speed was also used in the old BMW 540's.

Default merc trans

Chrysler and Jag call it a W5A-580, Mercedes calls it a 722.6

Chrysler used it in LOT's of cars.. and Mercedes has been using it in one form or another for almost 30 years.. early versions were none computer controlled ext ext...

Its a good trans.. as long as you change the oil every 25k like Chrysler and Mercedes recommends... Do it like jag and never change it till it go's BOOM... and your out a bunch o money.. as far as i am concerned...

GM? Seriously?

As others have stated the XK8s and Rs were equipped with the following transmissions:
  • 4.0 XK8 - ZF 5HP24
  • 4.0 XKR - MB W5A-580
  • 4.2 XK8/R - ZF 6HP26
The ZF 6HP26 is still used in the current XKs, XFs and XJs

The 1995 to 1997 XJR was a GM gearbox

To complement the above posts, the MB box is from the 722.6xx series, where jaguar has the 722.650. The newer XKs, XFs and XJs use the 6HP28 from ZF.

CORRECTED... as most of the XJS boxes in the 70s and 80s were GM Turbo 400s (a fine transmission) but the question was specifically regarding XK8/Rs...As pointed out in Jaxkr's post below the XKEs had the Borg Warners, thanks for the correction! (Maybe I forgot about that because the automatic in our 67 XKE 2+2 was crap)

Regardless, and back to the original point, there were no GM transmissions used in Ford developed XK8/Rs

The XKE never had a GM transmission they were Borg Warner, Jaguar did not start using the GM 400 until 1978 & that was the XJS & XJ12.

Yeppers...I had one in my 89 XJS... I had it rebuilt and found that it had a more robust torq converter and an extra valve body (so the GM tech informed me). The downside was a 3 speed tranny...therefore 55 mph was 2000+ on the rpm side. Couple that to a V12...and mpg went down th' crapper... I think in MY-92 (or thereabouts) they changed to the 4 speed. Much nicer.

Dear Fred

Thank you for submitting your request with Autohaus Arizona. We do stock
the ESSO LT 71 141 fluid from Pentosin as part number G052162A2 for
$15.92 per liter. Ten of them would run you $159.20.

Drive on jonjay

G052162A2 is an Audi/VW part# and some of their gearboxes use that fluid.

Default here we go again....

Many fluids meet that same spec, including the Mobil 1 transmission fluid. Interestingly enough, while some people (including Jaguar, of course) swear up and down that only the Esso product is appropriate, guess who that company is? Yep, Exxon. And who is also the same company? Mobil.

It's hard to imagine the same oil company would make two transmission fluids which both meet the same LT71141 specification yet for some reason only the more expensive dealer-branded version (at eighty bucks a quart for the synthetic, fifty for regular) is correct for the Jaguars. I took my (non-existent) chances with the Mobil 1 synthetic at eight bucks a quart and never looked back.

Audi G052162A2 = ZF LifeGuardfluid5 = Esso LT71141

Mobil 1 isn't the same oil but could meet the specifications, so there is a difference.

The only difference I am aware of is the color. Jag fluid is clear, while the Mobil 1 is red. Probably because everybody expects transmission fluid to be red, but I really don't know. There could be other differences, but in the meantime I think it is odd to have two fluids from the same company which meet the exact same specs, yet curiously enough only the more expensive of the two is proper and nobody can really tell us why.
