Default K and N filter

I think I'm going to order a K&N air filter for my 99 4.0l coupe, my filter box is in poor condition so I think I'll get a cone filter to fit directly onto the air flow meter.
Does anybody know the size of filter needed? or has anybody else done this?

Thanks

Blue

You might want to reconsider using the OEM air box. Replacing it with the cone filter will draw air from the engine bay (hot air bad) vs. through the front of the car with outside air (cool air good). Doesn't look quite as good but better for the engine.

Do a search on this topic on the forum as there are many threads discussing it. Some guys have used the cone, but worked up a way to shield it from direct engine heat and/or pull air thru the front vent.

I use the K&N with the Jag air box and am very pleased.

+1. These engines generate some serious under-hood heat. A cone filter open to under-hood air will reduce your performance.

Talk with Chris from Mina Gallery. I believe his has a heat shield connected to it and works very well. Just a suggestion.

+2 Totally agree with Jag #4 & WhiteXKR. I have a K & N filter in the stock box for the last four years no problems. I have read on the forums that some members have removed their aftermarket cone filters and replaced with the factory box and have seen performance improvement. When you clean and re-oil the K & N be careful don't over oil it. Too much oil can make the map sensor foul out. I've been running K & N's on all our vehicles for about 10 years with no problems.

Add me to the list, stock air box with a K&N air filter in it. Cleaned it maybe 3x over the last 100,000 miles. Never a problem with too much oil...just can't get over-zealous on it.

Thanks all, I was going to look at shielding it, the main reason for the cone is my filter box is broken and has had a particularly bad repair done (not by me I might add) so it might be a bit of e-bay searching for a new box and I'll get a std replacment KN element.

Thanks Again

QUESTION: After installing the K&N in the Stock Airbox... have you noticed that the vehicle will "Coast" or not "Slow Down" normally, when you take your foot of the peddle??
2 out of 3 vehicles i have "K&Ned" did this.

I'm wondering how the XK8 responds.
