Hi ,i wounder if any one can help me .
I have a 1999 xk8 last weekend while driving a noticed a knocking,tapping noise.
This happens when the car is warm ,not cold .
If i increase the revs ,the knocking becomes faster .
If i put the steering on full lock in both directions,the noise knocking stops .

If this knocking is coming from the front of the engine, don't drive it until you've investigated further. The early XK8's have a known issue with tensioners which can destroy the engine when they fail.

I know it's extremely difficult to describe a noise! Try to give an indication of whether it's from the engine, the suspension or the steering.

Thank you for your help .
I have done some reading up on the cam tensioners .
Would you have any idea why the knocking stops when on full lock ?
Also, i forgot to mention ,when on full lock with the revs increased (knocking stops ) but when i take my foot of the power ,engine stalls .

 

That's an interesting combination of events! In summary it's:

1. vehicle stationary
2. in Park
3. knocking sound occurs with steering straight ahead
4. knocking stops on full lock
5. engine stalls at idling rpm

Although it's likely to be more than one issue (knocking and stalling), have you checked the engine mounts? These are a known weakness.

It may turn out to have nothing to do with the knocking but got to start somewhere on the list of possibilities.
